Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson

Updated on October 20, 2014

Treasure Island is the greatest story that every boy must read. This was my all-time favorite book when I was younger and for many young boys and girls.

There are not enough words to describe the book Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. It is considered one of the greatest fiction books of all time and most of us have either read it or watched one of the movies based on the book. This book captured my imagination when I read it for the first time in 3rd grade when my grandpa gave me it as a present. I so wanted to find hidden treasure and would imagine that I was Jim Hawkins. I've always been an avid reader but this book brought out my love for reading. There are hundreds of similar stories and blogs about this book but I wanted to share mine as well.

I prefer the books that have illustrations and are easy to read with larger print.

Read the book to your child or purchase it as a gift for them

Reading has become a chore for many children nowadays. They would rather watch TV or play video games. I am experiencing this myself with my oldest son who is 8. I have set a balance and just recently been encouraging him to read books that I loved as a child including Treasure Island. For preteen boys this is one of the best books for them to actually finish. I was going to write a lens about my top books for young boys based on my experiences but Treasure Island needed a lens of its own because it's that important. It's not vulgar and has all the action and adventure you could want. A boy named Jim has obtained a treasure map, I won't tell you how it got it because I would give away a good part of the story. Anyways, he has the opportunity to sail with a group of people to find the treasure on the map. Of course, there are pirates involved in the crew with the notorious Long John Silver getting on board as a cook. I don't want to give it all away for those who may not have read it but it keeps you interested from the beginning until the end. I highly recommend if you have the book at your home to read it to your child or encourage them to read it. If you don't have a copy you can check it out at the library or purchase online. I am very passionate about reading and this book in particular. So please encourage reading and for those youngsters who are stubborn about reading, this book may be the book to make reading a pleasure and not a chore.

For true fans, this is a remake in the future with Jim being older and as stated, return there. I enjoyed it.

This is my favorite movie that i have seen. Probably has nostalgic value but I recommend this one the most among the many remakes.

More violent than the others. I saw it in 2012 I believe with Eddie Izzard as Silver. Storyline has the same premise but is definitely different with characters and substories. For example, Silver's girlfriend which is created for this movie and Jim's mother have large roles .
