Updated on April 14, 2015

Introduction

In the heart of the Keystone state, in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, there is a wonderland filled with beautiful, scenic flowers and breathtaking views called Longwood Gardens. It is a spectacular collection of colorful flowers, grand trees, scenic fountains, and an extravagant conservatory. It is literally a magical world of horticulture, created by industrialist Pierre du Pont (1870-1954).

Take a Walk Through Longwood Gardens

Enjoy the beauty of Longwood Gardens while taking a walk and enjoying the breathtaking views, on 1,077 acres, including 20 indoor gardens and 20 outdoor gardens. Here is just a small sampling of what you might find:

The Chimes Tower

Among the beautiful outdoor gardens is a structure called the Chimes Tower. The original Chimes Tower was constructed by Longwood Gardens founder, Pierre du Pont, in 1929-1930. It was based on a similar structure which he had seen in France.

The original chimes were replaced in 1956, with an electric carillon made in the Netherlands. It contains 62 cast bells, weighing over 38,000 lbs. The lower stairway of the tower is open daily to the public.

Fountains and Fireworks Spectacular

Longwood Gardens can be visited year round, and there are special events held, including the famous Fountains and Fireworks spectacular, which is held from May through September each year.

My favorite event is the Longwood Gardens Fountains and Fireworks Event, held each year from May through September. It combines spectacular fireworks, beautiful music, and colorfully illuminated fountains.

Here is a sneak peek at some of the spectacular fountains and fireworks:
