Vaastu Shastra is a science, having a logic and reasoning behind every guideline. It is an ancient science that originated in the Indian subcontinent and has been proved to be effective. One can create a healthy and harmonious living and work environment just by following the principles of vaastu. Useful and practical tips are given in the location, spacing and placing of objects within your home, office and in the garden. Ideas are given in harmonizing the colors and the materials.

A vaastu consultant is in great demand these days, as people like to consult before constructing any building, or buying any property. He also advises you in making any necessary modifications in your existing home or office for harmonious living.

In a house, according to the principles of vaastu, every room should be located in a certain direction and each room has its own guidelines of vaastu to be followed for perfect living and well being of its occupants.

I shall deal with the vaastu for kitchen in this hub.

Best Location and Placing For A Comfortable Kitchen

Best Location For A Kitchen

Ideally, a kitchen should be in the south-east or north-west of your home. In earlier times, when food was cooked over open fire, it was always advisable to have the fire in the south-east or north-west so as to avoid the hot summer winds that blows from S-W to N-E which would ignite combustible material stored by the fire.

Having a kitchen in the North-east of your home must be avoided, as it occupies the space that should be reserved for a meditation room and living room from which all other spaces open up. This is because of the scientific reason that the constant morning sunlight enters from the east and north sides of the home.

Best Position For Door And Windows in a Kitchen

A door to your kitchen can be provided in the North, East or North-east. It makes sense that when you have a South-East kitchen, you can have an L-shaped kitchen with the counter tops on the east and south adjacent walls for efficient spacing. Therefore an entrance can be only from the north or west walls. And since living and dining areas will be on the northern side of the home, it is only possible to have a door on the north. And it should open clockwise as most people are right-handed.

Window placing in a kitchen is extremely important. Having large windows on the east wall ensures the entry of the early morning sunlight. The person who gets up early to cook for the family receives the first rays of the sun which is beneficial to health. Since germs thrive and breed in kitchen, it is good that the sunlight enters and its UV rays will kill the germs. Additional smaller window can be provided in the south wall for cross ventilation. Since there are fumes and odor associated with cooking, having this window will ensure the speedy exit and the entry of fresh cool air from outside.

Best Position For Cooking Stove

The main kitchen appliance, namely, the cooking range or stove must be placed in the South-East corner of your kitchen. In a south-east kitchen, it is wise to have the counter-tops on the east and south making the south-east corner perfect for your kitchen stove. This ensures proper spacing for the remaining part of the counter-top for cleaning and preparation of food. Also, the cooking stove must not be visible form outside as the person cooking needs privacy.

Did you know that one should prepare food while facing the east ? This is to ensure that you catch the maximum morning sunlight while cooking as otherwise, you may not have the time to go out and get enough sunlight.

Best Position For Kitchen Sink

The kitchen sink should be positioned in the north-east. In olden days, when there was no running water available, water for cooking was stored in the north-east so as to allow the early morning sunlight to kill the germs.

The sink and cooking range should never be placed next to each other, as fire and water do not go together. The sink must not be placed in the corner of 2 counters, either. As it is difficult for you to lean over and washing becomes cumbersome. Leaking taps must be replaced immediately.

Drinking Water Filter

It follows from above that drinking water storage and water filters must be placed close the sink in the north-east of your kitchen so as to allow the UV rays of the sunlight entering to clean germs and keep your drinking water safe for consumption.

Placing of Electrical Appliances

The different electrical appliances in regular use in your kitchen must be placed in such a way that they are easy for you to handle as well as they allow for smooth functioning of the main purpose, namely the cooking.

Your refrigerator must be placed ideally in the north-west or south-west corners of your kitchen. The counters being placed on the east and south walls, the only option for a refrigerator is the north-west or south-west corner.

Your microwave can be placed next to your cooking range in the south-east corner as it is also used for preparation of your food.

The exhaust fan or kitchen hood must be placed on the eastern wall of your kitchen, as your cooking range or stove is placed facing east or in the south-east corner.

Small kitchen appliances such as toaster, blender, food processors can be stored out of view within the cupboards to be removed when necessary.

Overhead Kitchen Storage Guidelines

It is ideal not to have any cupboards over your stove or range, as they may catch fire or items from within may fall while cooking, and also they will be covered with soot, oil and grime over time which will be difficult to clean. It is best to have a chimney or kitchen hood over the range and have overhead cupboards over the rest of the counter-tops.

Colors Recommended For Your Kitchen

A kitchen must have colors that are natural, with plenty of green. Green greatly improves the appetite of family members and so having green granite for the counter-tops or hanging some green pictures on the walls is ideal. Alternately, you can have soft pink or orange. Studies show that the color of food can greatly influence the way it is perceived or enhance one's appetite. Greens such as forest green or lime green are fresh and soothing, while oranges and yellows that are used in fast food outlets are thought to make you eat more.

Should the dining area be situated within the kitchen ?

There is a certain pleasure in watching your meals being cooked in front of you and it makes you anticipate the taste and smell. Visual appeal adds to the interest. In olden days, it was the lady of the house who cooked the meal and served her family before she herself ate at the very end. This ensured that she served the food hot as soon as it was prepared. And did not waste anytime transporting everything to the dining table in another room. This same principle still holds good as it is convenient to have a dining area within or adjoining the kitchen.

Where should the dining table be placed when in the Kitchen ?

Ideally, the dining table should occupy a free corner so as not to obstruct movement while preparing meals. In a South-East kitchen, this would be the North-West corner. Also it is better to avoid placing it in the center of the kitchen.

L.L.Woodard,my suggestion would be that you could change the one important thing in your kitchen, and that is the cooking range. See if you can have it in the south-east corner or at least on the east wall. Never cook facing the south.Considered to bring economic downfall.

Pamela99, these are not suggestions, but an ancient science called Vaastu, which have been scientifically proved to be beneficial to man.

I have a long narrow kitchen so some of your suggestions can't work for me but I think your suggestions are ideal.

Most of my kitchen is set-up nearly opposite of what is recommended here. Short of re-doing the house, I don't know how to change it. Any suggestions?
