Dining set advice

Updated on August 27, 2010

The central point of any home is the dining room. This is where you spend time with your family or friends after a long working day. Taking this into consideration it is very importat to get the right dining set that will fit your home but also your personality. You also want to make a good impression on our guests!

There are a severall different things to consider when you plan to buy a new dining room set. Bellow you can find the four most important (in my oppinion) points you should think about before choosing your dining set:

1. The budget

If you are one of the lucky people that does not need to worry about the money you can jump to the next point. Now, for the rest of us. First you need to know your budget. This will ease your search because you will leave out a lot of very expensive or very cheap dining sets out there. Spend only as much as you can afford!

2. The guests

It is very important to know how many people will regulary join the dining table. If you often throw parties or have dinner with friends, know the regular number of guests. You would like to avoid having a crowded dinner with your family and friends. So, for a family of 3 or 4 I recommend a 7 piece dining set. Ofcourse you need to have a medium to large dining room as well. If you want more space to use try to avoid round tables.

3. The style

Another factor to think of when buying a new dining set is the style. There are various styles, shapes and colors to choose from. Make sure the dining set is suitable for your home. Note that during lunch or dinner a lot of conversations happed, so make sure anybody can talk to each other without shouting.

4. Material and finish

There are a lot of different options to choose from when it comes to materials. Of course, most of the dining sets are made out of hardwood that usually blend in with any kind of furniture you may have in your home. Anyways there are a few other materials you can choose, like: rattan, steel, iron, etc. Remember that the material has to blend in with the overall house design.

If you feel creative and you want to add a personal touch to the design of your home you can place other items and accessories inside the dining room. Maybe a buffet hutch or a chandelier.

You should think of dining sets as a long term investment. The set you choose should be a set that looks solid and that will last for many many years. That is why i recommend doing a comprehensive research before you buy, take the time and check out reviews on online dining set stores, product descriptions and so on.

One thing that I find very helpful to do before buying a new dining set is to talk to people who actually own the model you are about to buy. Reading the product description and looking and the pictures is ok, but interacting with people that bought the set and have it in their dining room is a big plus and will help you identify any possible drawbacks of the table or chairs. So, if you have a relative or a friend who just bought the dining set you are about to buy try to get their opinion too. Maybe pay them a visit and see the table and chairs yourself.

Also, try to hunt around the shops as well. Furniture stores are great places to visit and make your mind on a product. Here you can actually see and touch the dining set and visualize how it would look in your home. Even if you find the set of your dreams in your local shop I recommend doing a research online for that product and get the best deal for it. Shopping online has quite a few of advantages - you can get free shipping, discounts, vouchers, etc.

You can talk to people on forums, blogs or read customer reviews online. Most people are willing to help and they may be a big factor in your decision. For example, you can look at the bestselling dining set and start your search from peoples oppinions on that product.

So, I hope this post has been informative and will help you make the right decision in choosing your new dining set. If you would like to ask questions on this subject please use the comments form bellow. Thank you!
