Yup. If you choose a wild-type it should come true from seed. With cultivated varieties, its a crap shoot. You might get good fruit or poor quality fruit.
If fruit is ripened naturally, we can use the seeds to grow new plants. I have grown a variety of vegetables from seeds of fresh vegetables/fruits bought from market. Cucumber, okra, tomato, bitter gourd, mango... Buying the seed directly makes the whole process much more simple. I remember growing French beans from store-bought seeds.
No, it's not worth it, genrally it takes about 20 years for the tree to produce good fruit, with apple it can be much longer. Growing from seed does have the advantage of total control if growing bonsai; however, it is still a lengthy process.
Yes! We planted peach seeds a couple years ago -- lengthy process just getting the seeds ready. Once the pit was out of the fresh peach, it had to be dried a couple months, then put in a compost or mixing soil and stored in the refrigerator for 2-3 months. Almost all of the pits split and sprouted - a very good sign. We then took the sprouts and re-potted them. This will be our second year. They have now been transplanted outside in our yard - 12 seedling trees - but about 2 ft. tall and they are sporting new leaves this spring. Who knows? It may take 20 years to produce a good harvest of peaches, but someone will be blessed by it!
