   There are many types of filters in circuits.  A tuner on a radio basically tunes into a frequency which selects a station. 
   
   The tone control in your stereo is a filter and it allows you to set the level of base (lower frequency) and treble (higher frequency).|
   
   There are circuits that get rid of noise in household electrical circuits.  There are also circuits that are used to tune many things even microwave frequencies.
   
   A filter is device that will pass certain frequencies while decreasing other frequencies.  This would be in a passive filter.
   
   Active filters can amplify some frequencies while decreasing others.

   The are many types of filters, both analog and digital. A filter is a device, component or subsystem whose function is to allow a range of frequencies to pass a point in a circuit. So high pass filters allow frequencies beyond a cutoff frequencies to pass, low pass filters only allow frequencies below a certain frequency to pass, band pass filters only pass frequencies between two cutoff frequencies and band reject filters remove unwanted frequencies between the cutoff frequencies.
   An example of filtering is the electronics behind a graphic equalizer. This can be used to boost or attenuate the frequency content of audio. Filters are used in the tuning circuits of radio receivers to select broadcast channels from the radio spectrum. EMI filters on the power input stage of appliances and power tools reject high frequency noise and prevent it traveling back up the line where it could cause interference on radio and TVs.
