There are actually
four types: crank-operated drums, center-axle mounted drums, base
mounted rolling drums and rolling spheres. The most recommended
among the four is the crank-operated drums because wastes can easily
be emptied and the drum itself is easy to operate. However, while
this is the most effective type of composting tumbler, it also is the
most expensive one.
Meanwhile, center-axle
mounted drums are also good but not as effective as the crank-operated
drums. Mounted in vertical form, it can be operated easily but
emptying it is a bit difficult. Base mounted rolling drums are
also like the center axle mounted drums (efficiency wise) except that
the later is horizontally mounted and is on a ground level. Lastly,
we have the rolling spheres which are actually the hardest to operate.
Aside from that, they are also hard to empty making it inconvenient
and time consuming on your part.
Another way to make sure that your vermicomposting farm (either in a large or small scale) realizes its purpose is by taking time to look at their smallest needs. Though the work will mainly come from the worms, your responsibility on them welfare is very vital.
