There is a beautiful youngish maple in front of my house that was injured by the recent snow...

storms. A large lower branch must have snapped with the weight of the snow and a neighbor sawed it off. Now there is a very deep and large gash in the side of the trunk and I fear the whole tree will die if not tended to since the insides are so exposed. What can I do to help protect this tree wound? Should I apply a fungicide or some kind of tar or bark wrap?

I found the following 2 references for treating tree wounds.  The second one mentions something called "Tree Wound Paint."

Advice from University Extension Centers is well-researched and can be trusted over advice from general internet sites.
