What are some small trees that grow well in shade?
Particularly, trees that are native to or thrive in the Northeast USA.
Dogwoods like to be grown in filtered light such as would be found under other trees. The dogwoods usually grow to a height of less then 30 feet. Comus florida is a species of dogwood that is native to eastern North America. I have seen them with white flowers or pink and they usually display a great fall foliage that turns crimson. I would check them out as they are probably one of my favorites.
Acers make good underplantings, just avoid Acer campestre (field maple) which, as it name suggests likes to grow in the open.
