I want to start a raised garden this spring and have no idea where to begin.

Of course you start with the dirt, a good blend of sandy loam, clay and humus positioned and arranged at the location you have selected. If you are making a permanent site with trees and scrubs, you need to space them around allowing for growth or spreading towards the back or center of the raised bed if viewed from 360°. Place the tallest plants in front of the scrubs or trees with the shorter selected flowers toward the front. This way you will be able to look over the raised bed and view each selection you choose. You may wish to add bark or mulch around your plantings to help hold moisture as well as make your plantings more distinct and attractive.
