Is there an environmentally friendly way to eliminate water stains from a ceiling?
We have purchased an older home that has some water stains on a popcorn ceiling. Is there an environmentally friendly way to eliminate the stains?
I found it all but impossible to do a "repair" to a SECTION of popcorn ceiling... since the product is sprayed on, and unless you do the same thing with the same or similar equipment, your patched (repaired) area will not blend well with its surroundings.... Since the "popcorn" product is fragile... most anything you do to simply "wash" it, will result in the popcorn/paint dissolving in to a disgusting mass....
That said, consider doing the ceiling of the entire room. Of course, you need to confirm that the underlayment (the ceiling board) is not damaged... and the source of the water is determined, and changed/modified/prevented....
After stripping the existing paint, PRIME the entire ceiling with "Kilz" undercoat. You may believe that the water-based is environmentally preferred... It's certainly a darnsite easier to clean up after!!!! A second coat of primer wouldn't hurt... tho' the manufacturer sez that one is enough.
After the primer has had plenty of time to dry, you simply re-apply new popcorn product... and - voila - you have a new-appearing, repaired ceiling....
