What are the color matches to attach a 3-speed ceiling fan?
I am trying to attach a universal 3-switch ceiling fan but cannot figure out the color matches. The colors of the wires are yellow, blue, purple, and brown. The slots in the switch are L, 1, 2, and 3. How can I find out the color-slot matches?
You will probably need a manual for the fan. If you don't have it, perhaps you can find it online or call a tech department. Fans are different both in the color wires they use and the way they get different speeds. Regarding the switch, generally the L connection is the HOT connection , and the 1, 2, 3 connections are the outward branches controlling speed. But some fans might operate like this:
Speed 1: L-1 (L connected to 1), Speed 2: L-2, Speed 3: L-3.
Other fans however might operate like this:
Speed 1: L-1, Speed 2: L-2, Speed 3: L-1+2 (L connected to 1 and 2)
There are many other connection patterns, so you not only need to understand the pattern your fan uses but also make sure you have the proper switch.
I have done some electrical work, but am in no way a professional so please take that into consideration.
Thanks Junkseller. Its a pretty old fan and we don't have the manual. We can't even find out what brand it is. There are no markings on the fan itself, at least none that we have seen.
That makes it kind of tough. Someone with electrical experience could figure it out if you know anyone. Or maybe try to find a smart salesman at an electrical/lighting store.

I have an 8 ft ceiling in the dining room. There is about a 1 ft angled wall to the ceiling...which is popcorned like the ceiling. I have painted my walls a medium brown but the ceiling angle now makes my room walls look really short. Now they look like 7 ft tall walls. What would happen if I...
