Does storing batteries in the refrigerator help?

Does storing batteries in the refrigerator make them last longer, or is this just a myth?

It might help with batteries that are rechargeale, especially in hot climates. The batteries would need to be kept in an airtight bag or container. The batteries need to be kept dry. The non-rechargeable batteries should be kept in a cool, dry place. After you take the batteries out of the refrigerator or freezer, they should be allowed to warm up to room temperature before use. Some manufacturers of batteries say not to refrigerate the batteries.

I doubt  that it would be effective, battery life reduces in cold weather.
