What is the best way to rid my variegated scheff of scales?
I have had the scheff for about 4-5 years and it continues to have that sticky "honey dew" residue on the leaves. I have cleansed carefully with a mild soapy water by hand but it just continues. Is there a way to clean it without have to use pesticides?
Hi Sandi, It sounds like you are on the right track with using soapy water to wash them off. Scales are hard to eliminate because of their protective waxy shells- even the newly hatched stay under them! A couple of tips: a swab or cotton ball with rubbing alcohol is also good for removal. It is important though to get stems and leaf undersides too. When doing this, cover the soil with plastic wrap or paper to catch any that may fall away; otherwise, they will crawl out of the soil and back on the plant. There is neem oil, a naturally derived deterrent, which works as a growth inhibitor. It is not a contact insecticide. The only thing with insecticidal products is the timing. There is a very small window of opportunity to make contact with scales during the crawling phase before they retreat to the safe wax cover again. Good luck:)
