Some of us can choose an electricity supplier and choose from many energy plans they may offer. Others are under one co-op and they can't choose. Regardless of the energy plans or energy company, there are many things we can improve at home and lower our energy consumption.
If possible, get the daily energy usage. This is the best way to measure our energy-saving efforts. When we know our daily energy usage, we can learn how or when our appliances work more energy efficiently.
The efficiency of our appliances is affected directly by the time we use them, the current weather, the wear and tear, etc. We can make them work to our advantage, lower the energy waste and pay less on our energy bills regardless of our electricity company or energy plan we are hooked with.
Just to start the conversation, when do you do your laundry?
We do laundry either before or after the day time rate increase. Same for the dishwasher, showers and any other use of hot water outside of small things like hand washing. The EV car is charged on night time rates as well.
This is resulting in some 3/4 of our usage being at night time rates of $.07 rather than $.12. Almost a 50% savings in return for our small efforts.
I don't really know where you live and you are a lucky fella.
I'm in Texas and the TOU (Time of Usage) plans are coming in and many of us we don't know when the electricity company switches us to that plan since many times we forget when our current plan expires. As of right now, we are averaging energy rates at 12 cents per kWh.
Check this out, I feel bad for California... 47 cents per kWh (4-9 PM)
In October 2020, SCE will offer a TOU rate with a 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. peak period and another with a 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. peak period, SCE’s Ramirez said. There will also be an optional “TOU Prime” with a super off-peak period aimed primarily at EV owners.
SDG&E’s March 2019 system-wide offering will have two TOU plans, both built around a 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. peak period priced at $0.47/kWh, Rate Reform Project Manager Katelin Scanlan told Utility Dive. The utility will also offer an off-peak price of $0.22/kWh and a super off-peak period from midnight to 6 a.m. at $0.16/kWh.
PG&E did not make its system-wide transition plans available to Utility Dive, but it is anticipated their model will largely resemble that of the other two IOUs.
