How To Advertise Your Website For Free

Updated on December 19, 2008

Free Website Advertising

Those of you who follow my articles know that I spend most of my time trying to explain how there is no such thing as free advertising, but as the saying goes "if you can't beat the join them".

There are many methods you can use to obtain free website advertising in the sense that it will not cost you money. All forms of website advertising will cost you in one way or another be it money or your most valuable asset, time.

Time management is the key to success with any business, and is often the difference between the business that makes it and business that fails.

Below I will list a few of the more common methods you can use for free website advertising. Many people are using these methods, so it is important to take time to learn to use these effectively, otherwise you will just blend in with the crowd.

Always learn how a free website advertising sites work, some of these are sites are simply uneffective and some only work for certain types of sites. Learn where the sites are obtaining the traffic that is sent to your site, and use a little common sense. If it sounds to good to be true, it normally is.

Article Marketing

Article marketing is my favorite form of free website advertising, and it is also one of the most powerful if used properly.

To use article marketing correctly as a form of free website advertising, it requires allot of keyword research. Google has a free tool you can use for this. Simply write down a few keywords that you want your website to rank for, and use google's keyword tool to find 100 to 300 long tail search terms.

Now you just write some informative articles targeting 1 to 3 of these long tail search terms each. These long tail keywords will have little competition making it easy to rank high in search results. There will be fewer searches per day for these terms but if you have 100 articles targeting 300 keywords at just 2 searches per day, you have created 600 targeted visitors to your articles. Of-course not all of these will follow to your website, but the ones who do will be much more likely to make a purchase.

The best way to get started is to hire a freelancer to create articles for you. There are thousands of freelancers on the internet who will write these articles for most times less than $10 per article. I recommend that you mix it up hiring freelancers and writing your own as well.

Social Networking

Social networking always seems to come up as a method of free website advertsing, however I seldom see this method done correctly.

Social networking works by being social, obtain ten friends that share a common interest as you, they have ten friends, their friends have ten friends, and so on.

Most people make the mistake of trying to ad as many friends as possible, and never even bother to even have a conversation past "thanks for adding me."

Quality over quantity here! Make a few friends that you will communicate with on a regular basis and let the rest work itself. This is a great way to obtain free website advertising, and make a few friends in the process.

Social Bookmarking

Social bookmarking goes hand and hand with social networking, and article writing. Often the friends you make on social networking sites have profiles on social bookmarking sites.

Do the same thing here as you do with social networking sites. Make a few friends that you have time to conversate with, and bookmark your articles. The rest of the process will work itself out.

Classified Ads

This is a very simple form of free website advertising, Find classified ad sites such as craigslist and post an ad. You should be short and precise on your descriptions.

If you need help writing a ad that sells, try hiring a freelancer to do it for you. Often you can get a ad written by an experienced sales page writer for just a few bucks. You can hire freelancers at sites such as elance.com, or bizreef.com.

Affiliate Programs

This one is not actually a method of free website advertising, however it is free to set up, and you only pay when a sale is made. Plus it is a great method to get plenty of backlinks to your site for free.

Affiliate Marketing sites such as commision junction, or shareasale.com allow you to post your site for affiliate marketers to advertise, and you pay them an amount you choose only when they refer a visitor who makes a purchase.
