• Adjust sprinklers to maximize effectiveness. If you see runoff, it means you either need to adjust the spray pattern or you’re watering too much at one time. The best way to water lawns and other plants is to water deeply. You can achieve this by watering for a few minutes, then letting it set for awhile, and then watering again. By doing this, gravity forces the water down to the roots, and you waste less water.

• Choose shrubs and groundcovers instead of a lawn for hard-to-water areas such as steep slopes and narrow strips of land.

• Water your lawn and garden in the morning when temperatures are cooler to minimize evaporation. Don’t water at night, because this can cause different diseases that will end up costing you more money in the long run, typically fungus issues.

• Spreading a layer of mulch around plants retains moisture and saves water. Bark, rock, compost, and pine needles do a fine job.

• Adjust your lawn mower to a slightly higher setting. The taller lawn will shade roots and hold soil moisture better.

• Check for soil moisture rather than following a set watering schedule. Generally speaking, a plant doesn’t need to be watered if you can detect moisture two or three inches under the surface. Rather than checking the soil on a daily basis, you can also put your plants on a watering schedule and install a rain sensor on your irrigation controller. This system will monitor rainfall and turn off your irrigation when it has recently rained.

• Use drip irrigation to apply water directly to the roots, where it's needed. Wind and evaporation make above-ground watering inefficient. Below-ground irrigation is the most efficient way to water. You can even water lawns with drip irrigation. There’s a grass tennis court in Arizona that has absolutely no above-ground irrigation. In order to do this, you have to run parallel drip lines that are no further than nine inches apart. The initial cost is more, but your water savings will be substantial!

• Reduce the amount of lawn in your yard by planting shrubs and ground covers. Consider plants that are indigenous to where you live.

• Group similar plants with the same watering needs together. By doing this, you won’t have to over water some plants.

• If you want a water feature, stick to a trickling or cascading one, because they lose less water to evaporation than spraying water into the air.

• When you are installing a lawn, select a turf mix or blend that matches your climate. Planting the wrong kind of lawn will result in a waste of water and poor results.

• Aerate your lawn once or twice a year. This will allow water to reach the roots rathern than run off of the surface.

• Have your plumber re-route your gray water, water from your sinks and tubs, to trees and gardens rather than the sewer line. This is legal in some areas and illegal in others, so check with your city codes before doing this.
