Do you do your own taxes or hire someone else to do them for you?

I would hire someone else, especially if there are more complicated aspects involved. For instance, I was doing my own taxes and ended up in a higher tax bracket than I should have. I was actually losing money and owing due to being married but filing separate. I figured I had to file separate so that my returns would not go to my husbands child support. We got help this year and learned about "injured spouse" where we can file together but split where the money goes. This got us in the proper bracket and now instead of owing, my husband has a return to go toward the child support and I am actually getting a return this year. If we had not gotten help on our taxes, I would most likely have owed and so would he.

Good to hear. That's the benefit in getting help from a tax expert, especially with more complex returns. They know the best route to take to ensure you're either paying less to the government or are able to get a higher return back. smile

in the past, i had an accountant to do my taxes yearly until I became a homemaker, I switched to doing my own taxes since I am jobless. Still doing it.

It's really good that you do your own taxes now, many feel intimidated by it even for simple returns. I know I used to be until I did for the first time. smile

Today I do my own. Much of the past too. There were a few years where I was a sales representative. Then with those expenses I used a professional. I learned about income averaging then, but now that is only allowed for farmers and fishermen. Long gone for all others.

I own a small business venture so I hire someone else to do it. It gets too complicated. I have heard of people with less complications tell me that they were happy with tax software, although I am not sure which specific ones.

Check your governments tax website, they'll often suggest a tax software to use, and you may not even need to pay for it. It's easy to use and you can also send your information directly from the program itself.
