Social Security anymore is a sham. If you expect to gain widow's benefits and get a fair shake from Social Security, believe me, you "won't." My companion who is also related to me and receives SSI because she is disabled, had been separated from her husband years ago. He died last year. So I applied for her widow's benefits. For SEVEN MONTHS she heard nothing from Social Security. So I reported this to the supervisors. They explained that it was taking so long because my companion was going to get substantial back pay and her husband having been a veteran, she was also going to get a hefty monthly check. Two months later she gets $180. A week later she receives a letter telling her "this" is her "back pay." She also got less than $500 a month widow's benefits. Two weeks later, we are both told that MY SSI was to be cut by $221 and my companion's SSI was also going to be cut by $221. Social Security adds $20 to this and tells us that this "is" my companion's WIDOW'S BENEFITS. Not being her husband, this was real "nice" they ways they used MY SSI to support her claim for benefits. If I was able to work I would tell Social Security where they can shove their $280 I now get in SSI. Since I have been disabled, I have NEVER gotten a full disability check from them, but it's nice how they reward all my efforts to care for a mentally disabled person who can not care for herself. It is the reasons I have turned to writing, so I "can" tell them where to put the crumbs they give me using "my" SSI and hers to call it this widow's benefits. The extra $20 they send a month is a BIG JOKE. What is an even bigger joke is how neither of us drinks or takes drugs, nor are we criminals but yet I watch these kind at the post office picking up "their full benefits" each and every month to "throw away" on their addictions. Rant, raving "mad?" Doesn't even begin to phase how I feel about Social Security.
