If you have a simple return and prefer to prepare your own return, taxact.com is a good site. Otherwise, almost every established tax prep company offers electronic filing through the IRS eFile program. Some companies still charge a fee to efile. But, most of the time it's included in the cost.
If you go to the IRS website, there is a list of free efile programs that are available. There are certain restrictions, such as income limits. If you search for free state forms, you can usually find those as well. Some tax companies will do both. The software and websites charge, the fee is usually based on the forms you use. I use taxslayer.com, my federal is free and I pay $9.95 for my state. I have wages, self employment, educations and deductions. My tax return is somewhat complicated. Thankfully I worked for a CPA firm and have an accounting background, so using a web based service worked out well for me, and the price was right.

I know someone who filed their taxes with Jackson Hewitt. They told them they owed. They sent...the IRS a check and received a letter that said, "Thanks for the check, but you never filed taxes last year. What can they do now?
