why do school kids have taxes deducted from their summer jobs and how do we get it back?
My kids had summer jobs and had federal and state taxes deducted - is this right and if not how do we claim them back from the IRS and State?
Because the government doesn't play favorites if you make over $300 in a year and you get it back just like most other working Americans by filing a tax return although I think if you claim them as dependents they might be out of luck. I'm not a tax accountant though so you might want to check with a tax preparer first.
Taxes are withheld because they may have a tax liability. File an income tax return for your kids to determine if they are due a refund.
FICA (Social Secuirty and Medicare) are withheld from all employee wages and are a set percentage. This money is not returned unless your consider future government benefits returned money.
