If the first national tax started in 1862 to support a civil war why are we still paying ?
Perhaps it goes to show just how much a war can cost. Country after country, even entire civilizations, have foundered over the expense of wars. The spoils of war hardly justify the cost of waging one. Our current war indebtedness probably will not get paid off until sometime late in the next century, if then.
