You can cover the inside of  your windows with bubble wrap. This provides additional insulation which will lower the gas or electric bill.
If you live in a climate that doesn't have a brutal winter, try space heaters rather than central heat. Quartz and ceramic heaters are very good; I use them.
You can plant a winter garden. Here are some veggies that grow in winter.
    beets
    Belgian Endive
    Broccoli
    Broccoli Raabe, rapini
    Brussel sprouts
    Cabbage
    Cardoons
    Carrots
    Cauliflower
    Celeriac, celery root
    Celery
    Chicories
    Curly Endive (Frisee)
    Escarole
    Fennel
    Herbs
    Horseradish
    Jerusalem Artichokes and sunchokes
    Kale
    Leeks
    Onions
    Parsnips
    Potatoes
    Radicchio Radishes
    rutabagas
    shallots
    Sweet potatos
    Treviso (radicchio}
    Turnips
    Winter squash
Of course, you must find out about the planting season based on your state. Google, "State-specific Guides".
Good anytime is repairing furniture or finding furniture that can be easily repaired. I have saved a fortune by not buying or delaying the purchase of new furniture. These are just a few. Good luck.
