Household Money-Saving Tips

Updated on September 9, 2017

Easy Household Tips

Saving money is what we all are trying to do. It's bad enough that everything has gotten so outrageously expensive. Here are a few tricks and tips that might help you save a little.

If you have some money saving tips please feel free to add them in the comment box that way we can all help each other !

Save your Clothes Dryer

Save your Dryer, Electric bill and your house.

Keep your Dryer's heating unit from going out with this simple Tip:

Pull your Lint Filter out, you either have lint on it or not. Any ways, run some hot water on it and you will notice that the water is not running through the tiny holes. That's because if you use dryer Sheets they leave a waxy film on the filter which will not let the air run through. You will see that the water just sits on top of the mesh.

Now, use some hot, soapy water and a small brush to gently scrub the filter, Rinse and Voila......now the water runs right through the filter.

Doing this every 5 or six months will save your dryer unit, Electric bill and will save your home from burning down.

Just by removing the lint off the filter and putting it back in the dryer is not enough.

Hydrogen Peroxide

To Clean glass and have them Streak Free!

Instead of wasting money on Glass cleaner products use Hydrogen Peroxide, it is very inexpensive.

Pour peroxide in a spray bottle. Clean Windows, Mirrors, glass tables streak free!

This tip is amazing. I tested this on my bathroom vanity mirrors. I sprayed a glass cleaner on one side and peroxide on another. I have to tell you that using the glass cleaner I had to continuously wipe and it still left streaks. On the other mirror using peroxide I wiped a couple times and it was absolutely streak free and I had no more Foggy mirrors after taking a Hot shower.

Baby Wipes & Containers

Don't throw the containers away

You don't have to have babies to buy or use Baby Wipes. Leave a container in the bathroom for all time feminine freshness. The Sensitive Baby wipes are best for sensitive areas to keep it clean and fresh, Get my drift?

Don't throw away the container just get the refills to restock. Also, the containers can be used for storing small items and keeping your cabinets free of clutter.

Baby Powder for flat oily hair

For those in between days were you are in a hurry and don't have time to wash your flat and oily hair.

Sprinkle a little baby powder in it and finger rub it through your hair. It will automatically give it body, absorb the oil and make it smell fresh.

This will hold you over until you do have a chance to wash it.

Fresh Lemons for a cough

I came across this by accident and frustration

My husband had a bad cold, along with that cold he had an irritating cough. The over the counter cold medications and cough syrups weren't lasting. I had a couple of lemons in the frig. So I cut one in half, squeezed some on a tablespoon and made him swallow it.

In just seconds he stopped coughing and it lasted for hours. I was ecstatic!!! I couldn't believe how the lemon worked so wonderfully. Especially after all the money I had spent buying medication. This only works with FRESH lemons. I tried Lemon juice another time and it did not work.

So Remember, only fresh lemon if you have a cough with your cold. For children use one teaspoon.

I keep lemons in my frig at all times now.

Cranberry Juice for Urinary Tract Infection

Drink Cranberry Juice if you suffer with Urinary Tract infections. At the first sign of a Urinary tract infection try to drink one 32oz bottle up as fast as you can, you might get instant results. Depending on how far you let the infection get, or.... Drink at least 5- 20 ounces of cranberry juice a day for 2 days. The Cranberry juice should relieve your pain and fix the problem with in eight hours and you might not have to drink any more by the second day.

Be sure to use plain Cranberry Juice. Not Cranberry Cocktail or any other Cranberry mix with another flavor.

Knorr Bouillon cubes

I am from Germany and when I cook I have always used "Knorr" products. I am so glad they finally have Knorr products in the USA.

My one favorite is the Bouillon cubes. Knorr has Chicken, Vegetable and beef. Blending flavors of beef, chicken, garlic, parsley, onions and other spices. These are great tasting to add to all of your cooking dishes such as Soups, Stews, Roasts, Gravies, pasta entrees, stir-fry's etc.

They are not overly salty like other bouillon cubes. To enhance flavor fast, just drop you one of these cubes in your recipe.

Right now the cubes are not expensive.

What can you do with Baking Soda?

Baking soda is non toxic and safe to use in the household, around children and pets. To be sure the baking soda is fresh you can check it by pouring a small amount of vinegar or lemon juice on it. If it doesn't bubble, then it's too old to use.

I am going to give you just a few tips as to what you can do with it.

1. Cleaning Sink & Tub Drains.

Pour 1/2 cup baking soda followed by 1 cup vinegar in drain. Let sit for 10 minutes, then flush with hot water.

2. Deodorize and soften clothes and towels

Add 1/2 cup baking soda in rinse cycle.

3. Clean Suede

Apply baking soda with a soft brush. Let sit, then brush off.

4. Tenderize tough meat.

Rub meat with baking soda, let stand for several hours, rinse.

Using salt in the household

Salt is not just for flavoring food

There are many ways to use salt, preserving, cooking, cleaning and more.

Here are a few tips.

1. Sinus problems

Mix one tablespoon salt into 1/2 cup very warm water. Use a straw capping the top with your finger tip to hold water in straw to hold solution,

pour water into nostrils one at a time tilting your head back. If you have a sinus infection this might burn but that is okay because the salt is killing the infection. Tilt head forward and the small amount of water will run out. Then, within a few minutes blow your nose. You should feel relief from stuffiness.

2. Fireplace

Every now and then, throw a handful of salt in your fireplace to loosen soot inside the chimney. Also makes a bright yellow flame.

3. Starch

Add a dash of salt to Laundry starch to keep iron from sticking to your clothes.
