Is May 21, 2011 "Judgment Day"?

Predictions from a small American religious sect have gained widespread attention. Will the world end this year?

Iran's Ahmadinejad Survives Worst Storm of His Presidency

Istanbul, Turkey - Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has survived one of the most turbulent political storms of his seven-year presidency, a stand-off with Iran's supreme religious leader that caused some to believe he would be impeached or forced to resign as early as this past weekend.

But Mr. Ahmadinejad arrived in Istanbul today for an international conference as planned, after accusing political enemies of dirty tricks and brushing off his weeks-long defiance of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Beheaded Bodies Dumped Outside School in Mexico

DURANGO, MEXICO - Suspected drug hitmen dumped six headless bodies outside a school in northern Mexico Monday a day after forensics pulled victims out of a nearby mass grave in a stream of unrelenting violence that is pressuring Mexican President Felipe Calderon.

Durango, once a quiet farming and tourist city, is caught up in a war over its lucrative smuggling routes to the United States between the feared Zetas gang and Mexico’s top trafficker, Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman, who heads the Sinaloa cartel, the country’s biggest.

More than 38,000 people have died in drug violence across Mexico since Calderon sent the army to fight the cartels on taking office in late 2006, shocking Mexicans, testing bilateral ties with Washington and damaging Mexico’s reputation abroad as a destination for tourists and foreign investment.

Al Qaeda Leader Vows Revenge So Fierce That U.S. Will Miss Osama Bin Laden

A leader of the al Qaeda offshoot that U.S. officials have called the greatest threat to the U.S. vowed in a message posted on Islamist websites Wednesday to take revenge against the U.S. for the death of Osama bin Laden, saying that jihad would only intensify and that Americans would come to "wish for the days of Osama."

"Do not dismiss this battle so easily, and give your people false hope that if you kill Osama that it is over," promised Nasir al-Wahishi, a leader of the Yemen-based al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). "What is waiting for you is far greater and more dangerous, and you will then count your regrets, wishing for the days of Osama."

"We are sending a message to [U.S. President Barack] Obama and [Secretary of State] Hillary Clinton that we will avenge the death of our leader Sheikh Osama bin Laden very soon," Hamami said during a Shabaab meeting in Afgoye town west of the capital Mogadishu, according to a report by the Agence France Presse. Hammami did not say when or how Al Shabaab planned to act.

More Than 80 Rebels Killed in South Sudan

UBA, Sudan, May 11 (Reuters) - More than 80 rebels were killed in clashes with the army in south Sudan, a government minister said on Wednesday in the latest violence to mar preparations for the region's independence.

People from Sudan's oil-producing south overwhelmingly voted to secede in a referendum in January, promised in a 2005 peace deal that ended decades of civil war with the north.

Leaders from the south, where most follow Christian and traditional beliefs, have accused Khartoum of backing the rebels to disrupt the region and keep control of its oil.

Taliban Avenges bin Laden's Death With Massive Pakistan Bombing Attack

Pakistani Taliban militants claimed responsibility on Friday for a suicide bomb attack on paramilitary academy in a northwestern town that killed at least 80 people.

"It's the first revenge for the martyrdom of ... bin Laden. There will be more," Taliban spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan said by telephone from an undisclosed location.

The attack was a savage reminder of the toll militant groups are taking on Pakistan even as it faces international suspicion that elements within its security forces may have been harboring bin Laden, who was killed in a raid about three hours' drive from Peshawar.

12 Dead in Egypt as Christians and Muslims Clash

CAIRO — Clashes between Muslims and Coptic Christians in a Cairo suburb left 12 people dead, dozens wounded and a church charred in one of the most serious outbreaks of violence Egypt’s interim rulers have faced since taking power in February.

Clashes also broke out Sunday during demonstrations attended by Copts and Muslims to show unity and demand better protection from the government. As tension escalated, security forces cordoned off several parts of the city Sunday afternoon to quell the violence.

The increase in religious violence appeared to catch Egypt’s military rulers by surprise. They have struggled with continued unrest after a popular uprising that ousted President Hosni Mubarak on Feb. 11.

Report: Iran Nuclear Plant Fully Operational Within Weeks

Iran's Russian-built Bushehr nuclear power plant will be fully operational within weeks, local news agencies quoted a senior Russian diplomat as saying on Thursday.

The United States and other Western nations have urged Russia to abandon the project for years, fearing it would help Iran develop nuclear weapons. But an agreement obliging Tehran to repatriate spent nuclear fuel to Russia has eased those concerns.

Russia May Take Action Over U.S. Missile Shield

Russia's deputy defense minister has said action could be taken if the United States deploys its new missile defense system near Russia's borders. In a news conference on Friday, deputy defense minister Anatoly Antonov said the Russian military was looking at ways to "protect our nation if Russia is not consulted in talks with NATO."

The United States and Romania announced last week a deal to deploy missile interceptors in Romania as part of its plan to erect a missile shield over Europe. The move immediately drew criticism from Russia, which fears the scheme may compromise its security by weakening its nuclear missile arsenal.

North Korea and Iran 'Sharing Ballistic Missile Technology'

North Korea and Iran appear to have been exchanging ballistic missile technology in violation of sanctions, a leaked UN report shows. The report, obtained by Reuters, said regular transfers had been taking place through "a neighbouring third country", named by diplomats as China. The sanctions were imposed on Pyongyang by the UN after it conducted a series of nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009.

North Korea has twice tested nuclear devices and said in September last year that it had entered the final phase of uranium enrichment. The country is believed to have enough plutonium to make about six bombs, but is not thought to have developed a ballistic missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead.

The report said the transfers travelled through "a neighbouring third country". The country was not named in the report but one diplomat told the BBC some sanctions-busting takes place through China.

Hamas chief: We Will Coordinate All Decisions Regarding Israel With Fatah

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Hamas leader defends his organization's right to wage an armed struggle against Israel.

Hamas leader Khaled Meshal said Saturday that his movement will make all decisions regarding the struggle against Israel, including if and when to use violence, in coordination with the West Bank leading faction Fatah. Speaking from Cairo, just days after the Hamas-Fatah reconciliation agreement was signed, Meshal said that the best way to achieve their goals was through agreement with the Palestinian Authority lead by President Mahmoud Abbas.

Meshal also defended the Hamas' right to wage an armed struggle against Israel, which includes firing rockets from the Gaza Strip into Israel.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lambasted the reconciliation, declaring in a televised statement: "The Palestinian Authority must choose either peace with Israel or peace with Hamas. There is no possibility for peace with both," Netanyahu said in a televised statement.

The White House said Hamas was "a terrorist organization" and added that any Palestinian government would have to renounce violence. A U.S. official said it would also have to respect past peace deals and recognize Israel's right to exist.

Both Hamas and Fatah dismissed Netanyahu's ultimatum.

A New Mood in Cairo: Egypt and Israel Headed for Crisis

Israeli officials have expressed alarm at a succession of moves by the interim Egyptian government that they fear signal an impending crisis in relations with Cairo.

The widening rift was underscored yesterday when leaders of the rival Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah signed a reconciliation pact in the Egyptian capital. Egypt's secret role in brokering the agreement last week caught both Israel and the United States by surprise.

The Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, called the deal "a tremendous blow to peace and a great victory for terrorism".

More worrying still to Israeli officials are reported plans by Egyptian authorities to open the Rafah crossing into Gaza, closed for the past four years as part of a Western-backed blockade of the enclave designed to weaken Hamas, the ruling Islamist group there. Egypt is working out details to permanently open the border, an Egyptian foreign ministry official told the Reuters news agency on Sunday. The blockade would effectively come to an end as a result.

The same day Egypt's foreign minister, Nabil Elaraby, called on the United States to recognise a Palestinian state -- in reference to a move expected in September by Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, to seek recognition of Palestinian statehood at the United Nations.

Enter Unit 8200: Israel Arms For Cyberwar

Tel Aviv, Israel (UPI) - Amid mounting tensions in the Middle East, Israel's outgoing internal security chief, Yuval Diskin, says the Jewish state has been the target of attempted cyberattacks on key state infrastructure.

Israel's Military Intelligence recently established a special division of its super-secret signal intelligence and code-breaking group, Unit 8200, to take responsibility for all cyberwar capabilities. These are believed to be among the most advanced in the world. In 2008 Technolytics Institute, a private U.S. consultancy, rated Israel the sixth-biggest "cyberwar threat" after China, Russia, Iran, France and "extremist/terrorist groups."

The Jerusalem Post said May 5 that Unit 8200 was suspected of developing the Stuxnet worm. Computer experts generally agreed the mysterious Stuxnet virus - one of the most sophisticated malware systems ever detected - could only have been put together by the intelligence service of a state or combination of states.

26 Dead as Tropical Storm Leaves Philippines

Manila: Tropical Storm Aere left northern Luzon on Wednesday, but not before battering the Bicol region and leaving at least 26 people dead, a disaster official told Gulf News.

Most of the newly listed fatalities came from central Philippines and Metro Manila, not in central Luzon which Aure drenched and hit with rough winds from Monday to Tuesday, said Ronald Flores, acting officer in charge of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).The latest tally showed that Aere affected 71,267 families or 376,888 people in 464 villages, 65 municipalities, five cities, and 12 provinces in six regions nationwide, said Floers.

Mississippi Flooding: River Cresting, Louisiana Prepares for Rising Waters

As the swollen Mississippi River continues to rush downstream, flood-level water is heading directly for some Louisanna communities still recovering from last year's devastating oil spill and possibly forcing hundreds of thousands of people to evacuate. Many neighborhoods of Memphis, Tenn., remain submerged in dirty, debris-strewn and reptile-infested water.

The river will continue to press against Memphis levees for at least the next few days, officials said. The Mississippi there has swollen to six times its average width.

Record flooding is also expected in Baton Rouge and New Orleans, La.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers planned on opening three major spillways in Louisiana today and possibly the Morganza and Atchafalaya Spillway near Baton Rouge, which could force hundreds of thousands of people to evacuate some areas, but would alleviate the strain on city levees.

Louisiana Braces for Flooding Onslaught

(CNN) - Residents of the Atchafalaya Basin in south-central Louisiana, already urged to evacuate, late Thursday awaited a formal decision on whether a spillway will be opened, sending millions of gallons of floodwaters their way.

The U.S. Coast Guard said floodwaters could close the Mississippi to ships at the port of New Orleans as early as Monday morning, according to a spokesman.

Across the South and lower Midwest, floodwaters have covered about 3 million acres of farmland, eroding for many farmers what could have been a profitable year for corn, wheat, rice and cotton, officials said Thursday. Other farmers in Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee and Arkansas rushed to salvage what wheat they could ahead of the rising water. As for corn, farmers who were able to get into the fields during a soggy planting season in late March and April are seeing their crops in some cases under several feet of water.

Of course, the flooding is covering more than farmland. In Louisiana alone, Jindal said, as many as 3 million acres - of farms, forests and towns - could be affected. In Mississippi, 600,000 acres of farmland are only part of 1.4 million acres likely to be flooded, said Andy Prosser of the state's Department of Agriculture and Commerce.

In Memphis, which endured a record river crest this week, flooding affected between 800 and 1,000 properties, said Steve Schuler of the local emergency management agency. Many small businesses and farms were affected in Shelby County, and the river level was still high Thursday, he said.

Flooding also continues to be a problem in southeastern Missouri and southern Illinois, though the Mississippi and Ohio rivers have crested in those states.

There is a Message of HOPE for the WORLD!

Even though everything we have discussed and shown thus far seems to depict a tragic and fateful end for our world, that is actually NOT THE CASE! The state of humanity's existence does not end in chaos or complete destruction at this time. Nor will these events leave the whole world in a panicked state of confusion, always to be frustrated in futile attempts trying to achieve a Utopian existence. The "Great Tribulation" period is only for a few short years and is merely a transitional period at end of an age. A NEW AGE IS COMING immediately thereafter!

"...SEE THAT YOU ARE NOT TROUBLED; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet." (Matthew 24:6 NKJ)

"All these are the beginning of birth pains [sorrows]." (Matthew 24:8 NIV-KJV)

This is probably the most accurate representation of the entire "Great Tribulation" event. "Birth pains" are very discomforting and often quite painful. A new birth involves "labor" which is an extremely strenuous and exhausting process (ask any woman who has endured this). The end result however, is "relief" from this labor and suffering because a "new life" is then born!

That is exactly what will transpire in this world. We are in the final chapter of an old and worn out age of civilization. A grand and glorious new age lies directly ahead for those of us that endure and have accepted the Lord God.

"These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Therefore, they are before the throne of God and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will spread his tent over them. Never again will they hunger; never again will they thirst. The sun will not beat upon them, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; he will lead them to springs of living water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes." (Revelation 7:14-17 NIV)

THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT OF ALL THESE PROPHECIES

Therefore, these sometimes frightening words of prophecy are really a harbinger of hope to those who are searching for God today. It is through the belief that Christ died for our sins (John 3:16) and faith in His second coming (1 Thessalonians 4:14-18), that we are all "saved" and will enter into the coming Kingdom of Heaven along with Him.

"For the grace of God has appeared that offers SALVATION TO ALL PEOPLE. It teaches us to say 'No' to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope - the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ." (Titus 2:11–13 NIV)
