A New Declaration of Independence: A Moment With Bill Reflection

The Basis of Our Freedom

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these areLife, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.”


I propose that it is time to overthrow our government.

No, I am not talking about the Democratic Senate or the Executive Branch.

No, I am not talking about the Republican-held House of Representatives.

I am talking about the entire government of the United States of America.

Treason you say? How can it be treason when I am simply suggesting that we exercise those rights which are specifically laid out in the Declaration of Independence, a document generally recognized as the root of our freedom?

I do not call for a military take-over, nor do I call for citizens to rise up in violence. I simply call for Americans to exercise the rights which have always been theirs, and replace the present governing body with one that is truly representative of over 300 million people and not the upper one percent.

Why Would We Do This?

In case you haven’t noticed, our government is dysfunctional. Public trust in the government is at an all-time low and why shouldn’t it be? As recent events in D.C. have shown, compromise is just a word you will find in the dictionary between “circumcised” and “concubine.” Elected officials, placed into office to pass legislation that will help the majority of citizens, instead dance a little jig to the music played by banks, drug manufacturers and any other corporation with the millions necessary to buy votes for the wealthy.

Why would we do this? Think about this for a moment: there are over 320 million of us and only what, 10,000 politicians. We would do this because we can. We would do this because we must. We would do this because they have had their chance to lead, have failed miserably, and now should be sent packing with nothing more than the clothes on their back and the lies on their lips.

But My Radical Ideas Do Not Stop There

Oh no! Why think small. I think we should overthrow the economic system while we are at it. Again, in case you haven’t noticed it, the system is broken. Prices are rising, incomes have stagnated, opportunities are diminishing and profits are not being shared. Our corporate leaders are shipping jobs overseas; our government leaders are giving tax loopholes that encourage such cost-cutting measures; and we are left hoping that the minimum wage will be increased so we can afford bread next week.

So I propose that we tell capitalism to take a hike and don’t come back no more, no more, no more, no more. I propose we move towards self-sufficiency. I propose that communities come together and change the way we look at local economic structures. I propose that people stop living in debt, that people start doing for themselves and that people quit playing the consumerism game.

We Have Played Their Game Perfectly and They Are Proud of Us

Democrats blame Republicans. Republicans blame Democrats. Everyone blames the Tea Party. The poor blame the rich, the rich look in disgust at the poor, big business blames restrictions and the indigent blame the lack of societal compassion. The truth of the matter is that we all deserve a portion of blame. We bought into this b.s. a long time ago. We increased our spending on items we did not need. We ignored the warnings about dangerous chemicals in our food. We spent more than we had, demanded more than we had a right to, and hitched our wagon to an American Dream that never had a prayer of becoming reality.

Tell me who the fools are in this scenario, the corrupt politicians or the populace who continues to believe the lies and vote corruption in year after year? Tell me who the fools are in this scenario, the credit card companies who gouge your pocketbook with high interest rates, or the populace who continues to believe that happiness can be purchased with a gold card? Tell me who the fools are when dangerous products are produced, warnings issued and yet you continue to purchase those products? Tell me who the fools are when you know that your children are not receiving a first-class education and yet you continue to pass school bonds to pay for the inefficiency? Shall I go on?

And the leaders love it! They are sitting in their ivory towers right now laughing at us all.

They prey on our weaknesses like blood-thirsty jackals. They prey on our fears, they prey on our needs and they prey on our dreams. If you don’t do this then this horrible event will happen. If you don’t buy this then you will never know peace of mind. If you don’t vote for this person then you will forever be lacking in creature comforts and security. They make sure you are aware of your shortcomings and they promise to do something about those shortcomings, but the promises always fall short and you are left with nothing but more fear and more shortcomings.

It is madness and it must end.

Storm Clouds Are Rising

A full 70% of our economy is based on consumer goods. Think about that fact for a moment, and then consider what happens to such an economy when the consumers are no longer able to purchase those goods. It is widely believed that as the United States economy goes, so goes the world economy. If that is true, then what message is sent to the world when the U.S. economy is floundering without a life jacket?

I am convinced that the U.S. economy is heading towards a catastrophe that will make the Great Depression look like a Sunday picnic. The wealth of this country is controlled by a mere one percent of the populace. That, my friends, is a recipe for disaster, and there is no relief in sight. The promises being made are based on an antiquated formula that has long since been rendered meaningless. The solutions being suggested are the same tired solutions that have been suggested for decades and they have been proven incorrect in today’s world.

And yet we continue to play the game.

We continue to spend more than we make. We continue to blame our ills on “those other people.” We continue to vote into office those who simply do not care about our needs. We are screwed, blued and tattooed and we keep coming back for more.

It is time, my friends, for a revolution, and that revolution begins with you.

A Few Solutions

It begins at an individual level and then spreads to local communities, and no change will happen without a conscious decision to act. Become more self-sufficient. Lower your debt. Buy locally. Become involved in local politics at a grassroots level. Become the watchdogs who demand change that is good for all people and not just the wealthy….and for the love of God, quit blaming each other. This is not the fault of the Democrats, nor is it the fault of the Republicans. Every single time I see a rant on Facebook saying that the Liberals are to blame for our woes I want to scream, just as I want to scream when a Liberal says the Right Wing is at fault. Whenever we label each other we are playing the game our elected leaders want us to play. Don’t you see that? Don’t you understand?

I know in my heart that you can put me in a room with any one person and I can find grounds for compromise. I know that and you do too. Put me in a room with a group of people and I know that we can take steps and make decisions that will benefit everyone. We will just be human beings working together without labels and without agendas that will cripple any attempts of forward movement.

Change begins with you. Change begins with me. Human beings working together; the concept is as old as mankind, and it still works for those willing.

Unalienable rights…life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Strong words….true words….words worth revolting over.

      This is two years old and the old country she's even worse off. Amazing what can happen in two years. I am grieved that we don't exercise the right to boot out the gov't that doesn't work, or should I say, who don't work for us. I don't think it occurs to many people. We have gotten lazy, presumptuous, distracted, and many are ignorant. How many times have journalists pollsters gone out into the market place and asked people pointed questions about our gov't and the people are clueless. They are for obama care but can't tell you why, or they don't have any of their facts straight. Ask them who the vice president is, or the secretary of state and they don't know. Ask them why should we vote for so and so, or why shouldn't we vote for so and so and you get the most ridiculous answers which reveal their great ignorance of all things political or gov't. We needed Obama because he was black and promised change. They all promise change, but none before have been black so lets elect a black president, no matter his inexperience, his unsavory, anti american mentors and close friends.

      Now people are saying "We need a woman president because we've never had one before, and that was insulting to women, so let's get Hillary, because she's a woman. Never mind about Bengazi, that's the right making much ado about nothing. On and on it goes.

      I saw a comic the other day with Uncle Sam holding the donkey and the elephant by their tails saying "Ive had just about enough of you two." Me too. Pop was right, we may be too far gone to recover on our own. I am praying to God to spare us and lead us back to HIm.

      Exactly right. Don't let anyone talk you into spending more than you know that you can afford. That's how you get into financial trouble. GMO's? Don't eat 'em. Buy organic, or grow your own organically. Don't have a car if you don't need one. The list is endless. That's why there are commercials, to make you buy MORE.

      I say, back to the coffeehouses of yesteryear, to citizens of diverse viewpoints discussing the principles by which they would govern themselves, meet both their mutual and their particular needs, and relate in their communities. See conversationcafe DOT org and philosopher DOT org for two formats for civil and lively conversations.

      What are some questions to discuss? This hub and its videos suggest a few. There are many more. The purpose of such conversations isn't to come to consensus on what actions are needed but rather to go back to one's preferred action-oriented organizations with increased understanding and appreciation of differing views, resulting in better action choices. If common ground and consensus are found among persons with very different personal philosophies, so much the better.

      One set of questions on my mind these days are those raised by Alexander in THE NEW JIM CROW.

      Another question is: The labor movement song Solidarity Forever says, "They have taken untold millions that they never toiled to earn, but without our brain and muscle not a single wheel can turn." What happens when mechanization, automation, and computerization make many human workers obsolete? Not only are machines digging ditches, picking cotton, filing documents, and taking dictation; computers are now grading college classroom essays. And there is global competition for the shrinking number of jobs for humans that still exist. What role in society is there for the left behinds? The current "solutions" are to put millions in prison for the phony "crimes" of the "drug war"and to entice millions more into the military and the military-industrial complex to do the make-work of making senseless war and to let millions more become destitute. Are there better solutions?

      Question authority. Question the way things are. Pull back the wizard's curtain.

      Lizzy, thank you. The Patriot Act may become, if it hasn't already, the worst infringement on our freedoms since before the American Revolution. People bought into it because of fear, and now I am afraid it has grown too powerful. You are absolutely right: this is a government that rules by fear and it is gaining strength daily....and we are allowing it.

      Hopefully society will wake up soon.

      You've nailed it perfectly--and I have no reply that would not be so long as to be an entire hub in and of itself...but I will try.

      My husband, a lifelong student of society, has said many times, "If things keep going as they are, the US will have been the fastest rise and fall of a superpower in all of history!"

      You are so right--the revolution begins and ends at the polling place, and to make change, we must VOTE change.

      The TPTB recognize this--hence we are now seeing efforts from them to hinder that process and disenfranchise as many voters as they can, whether by fraudulent and illegal new "laws," or by fear-mongering and discouraging them from going to vote.

      This is government by fear, and it has another name: dictatorship. I truly feel that is what they are trying to do--overthrow our government from the top, disembowel our constitution, and turn this country into a dictatorship! There are so many dangerous precedents happening, citizen surveillance is on the rise; the so-called "Patriot Act" has nullified many of our guarantees such as freedom from illegal search and seizure or peaceable assembly. Cops are becoming legalized bullies--shoot first, ask later....It is scary, and I feel sorry for anyone with young children growing up in this climate of fear and hatred.

      VOTE THEM ALL OUT! IT IS OUR ONLY HOPE!

      Love your articles Bill each one is so filled with truth, our country is in bad shape, we need real change and we all need it fast. This is why I'm online making a difference to gain a much larger voice. Someday we shall bring such change, but I think it will come from the man upstairs for sure, and when he deems humanity ready. If these aren't the end time, then we surely have a great deal of fixing to do. I must agree!

      When I saw the title of this hub, Bill, I almost didn't read it because I thought, "New Declaration Of Independence", won't relate to me an Australian. But I thought, knowing Billybuc, there will be a greater message here for everyone. Glad I decided to read it. The same things are happening in our country with the Government more concerned with the economy than the people, and being bound by big business in all their decisions. We need a complete over-hall here as well of the Government and the way the economy is run. Yes we can do it, the people have the power if enough stand up for change, and say "Enough!"       I know that the saying is "truth hurts." I agree with that, but this time I want to add that the truth is scary. There seems to be nobody listening; perhaps we should all join you in airing our concerns as the answer to every question we're asked--no matter the question. Wonder if that will work?

      Bill, I totally agree with you. I think the entire system stinks and is not working properly or for the benefit of the people. The current system works for just 1 percent of the population and the politicians. My voting method has been and will continue to be, if you're an incumbent you don't get my vote. These politicians who make a lifelong career as a Senator or Congressman need to go flip some burgers for a while.

      Hello Bill. How are you doing ? My guess, the best ever. When someone clears his soul as you did in this article, gives the best spiritual food to needy regardless they are aware of their need or not- it's the greatest vitalization of spirit soul and body… A question is, how to promote text of this credo so that those one hundred million would get to know call to the action. Its not as much as to " overthrow our government " as of voters to meet the elected officials pointing to their lies /corruption, and make everyone who lied once only, to ask them to leave… Your urge for self-sufficiency is the only solution for continuation living without a blood-shed option. Would the people be willing to accept the truth presented in this article? Frankly , the current reality is worst then you've described, however not desperate; By now you probably have heard the positive turnaround in the state of Wisconsin? So many people working, creating surplus of revenue that the governor is lovering taxes and distributing money back to taxpayers. There is strength in the people- working people…

      Our generation isn't doomed to usher humanity into the final destruction. Or is it ?

      ( There is matching literature , some are vocal about the final annihilation though...)

      The situation in our nation is now so critical that it may be too late to reverse the course we are on. I agree with you, but I wonder have we changed so much that there are far less people around willing to fight for what they believe in and take responsibility for themselves.       Amen Bill!!! I agree (as you knew I would). And while some will decry this as treason, to stand up to our government, I say this: If this be treason, then treason is the last hope of honest men. We work, strive, slave away for our daily dose of living while those on their gilded thrones reap and rape, pillage and destroy America with no thought beyond what they can see, feel, own.

      Funny you should write this for I am currently working on an article concerning the price of gas for our cars. It is a roller coaster ride, rising and falling, always a little bit higher with each rise, and never quite as low as the previous low. One day we will crest that final rise and see a precipice below us and it will consist of a broken track with nothing to save us. We will be in free fall and hurtling towards destruction due to the greed and dishonesty of those few in power.

      We must find a way to halt this destruction before it becomes too late.

      I still say we need to run a viral campaign with you as our choice for President!!! And reading the posts of those commenting here, I think we ALL feel the same!

      Oh yes, it all happens here as well, though they all deny it of course. Lately there seems to be fraud and dishonesty everywhere in government. The honest ones never seem to get anywhere; they're either corrupted or forced out of office! However, we shouldn't give up, should we? You're right to say we should at least give it a go. Ann

      Ann, you paint a bleak picture my friend and unfortunately, it is an accurate one. I don't know about the UK and whether special interest groups are allowed to spend millions to influence votes like they can here....if we could abolish special interest groups from buying off politicians, that would be a start. As long as millions can be offered to the lawmakers we have no hope as a society. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

      Jackie, slowly but ever so surely we are losing our rights. It is a sneaky thing happening but it is happening, and the majority sit by and don't say a word. Hope? It's in small supply, but there will be none whatsoever if people don't continue to speak out against the wrongs....so that's what I do....and I have no desire to end up like Lincoln. :) Thank you my friend.

      A very good hub! What you said is so very true and we can't blame any one group for the problems in this country. That said, I do believe politicians - ALL politicians - should take a lion's share of the blame and for exactly the reasons you pointed out. While they point out the faults and behaviors of the groups (rich, poor, minority, majority, and on and on) the sit there laughing. Why? Because they've succeeded in pitting one group against the other and we've stopped looking at them. I've been saying for some time now we need to elect all new people and get some fresh blood into the government. I'd add to your list of solutions that the senate and congress should also have term limits similar to the President's. I think that would make it more difficult for the special interests groups, big business, and the like to form such close bonds with the politicians.

      As I've said before many times, the situation here in Britain is so similar. I understand you reasoning and I agree completely but I don't have so much faith in humankind at the moment. No matter what group of people get together, there will always be invested interests, there will always be a wish for power and domination, there will always be those who are in it for the money, for the glory or even solely for the attention!

      I do hope you're right, though, that this can be done. Like-minded people can get much done but discussion and reason with those who are not like-minded is extremely difficult. I would like to think that your ideal would work.

      On the other hand, it's definitely worth a try to how can it be worse than what we have at the moment? There is not one person, at present, who stands for parliament or local government whom I would want to vote for. Due to recent 'goings-on' in politics and local councils I've learnt not to trust, I've learnt to despair about our future well-being and future education. I'd like to believe in better and, yes, of course we have to make a move ourselves.

      I agree with DJ, billy, I have seen such good politicians come along and not be elected since before I could vote. It does seem a losing battle and the truth is some of us have read the ending and we can see it coming as many who have not read the ending can. It is just so written on the subway wall, isn't it? I'd vote for you too, you would be another Abe Lincoln and the sad thing is you would probably end up like him. I hate being past hope but look, we sit by and let our president prevent us from going into the White House for tours and all our school children when dozens have offered to pay for it even! It makes me so sick we have no say in nothing!

      I agree with everything you have written and all the questions you raise. This is government of the people, by the people and for the people so we have no one else but ourselves to blame because as you say we are voting in the same type of corrupt people. But, the true leaders in this country are smart enough NOT to run for office. Case in point: Gen. Colin Powell. Not that one person is our panacea but leaders like him are smart enough to stay out of politics. Only the mediocre run for office and make politics their life's work. Yes, it has to begin at the local level, but we are becoming too localized and not uniting together as a country. We have Texas and part or Colorado who want to secede from the U. S. Instead of banding together as a nation we want to break up the nation so we can have our own selfish ways. The whole nation needs an attitude adjustment!

      Dear Bill, You have stated a great truth for what is ahead as far as our economic meltdown will be far worse than anything we gave ever seen before or can even imagine! Our country will not even look like our country when it is all said and done. We should never go into debt personally as we are adding to the mess and becoming slaves to the lender as God's word tells. If we do not have the money to buy something then we just do without it.       So well said Bill, Like you I am getting too old to fight in the street. I want to but just don't have the health and energy to do so. Frankly all my time and energy is spent just surviving.

      Like you I speak my mind, I hope (maybe fruitlessly) that people will listen. I agree 100% that we as a people need to take this country back. I go about my days preaching this to anyone within earshot, I get laughed at, called a dreamer, and I assume worse.

      I rant at the Hippocratic behavior of those I see claiming to to be christian and helping the homeless while waving their flags of pride. I rant at the ((helpless) I see using the system, collecting worker's comp with a cane in the doctor's office and then dancing in the streets.

      I don't have an answer, some days I don't even want to exist. But like you, I keep yelling!

      Bill, THIS is a rant that is made from my own heart. You have nailed it spot on! Sure, I am one that admittedly leans to the right and I am a huge critic of those on the far left. But without a doubt, I realize there must be common ground. It must be done for the betterment of the lives of hard working people of this nation.

      Powerful words, scary as H but true. I believed in 2008, ' We the people had finally opened our eye's, now i'm not so sure. I read the comment above and i am in full agreement. I will vote for you if you go national. I can see it now, instead of a doggie, we would have Penelope and her friends running on the whitehouse lawn. We would have a veggie garden on the south side.       A super article, Bill. You speak truth, and most people will agree with

      your thoughts. The majority lost faith in our leaders many long years ago. I fear that my views have slowly changed from some degree of hope

      to a major degree of fatalistic inevitability.

      Forgive me for spewing negativity, but I feel old and I feel sicken from

      the view of self serving officials who make the decisions, but do not live by their own decisions.

      We need a few hundred thousand people, like yourself, who have the stamina to kick ass and take names.

      I have walked picket lines for the rights of people who I thought were

      getting the shaft from big companies. It did not put one penny in my pocket.

      I have worked for politicians who I thought could make a real difference

      in my community. They did not win.

      Much of the fight I once possessed has slipped into oblivion.

      Let me say that you are shining lights into areas that need to be exposed. Whether it is abuse or political corruption, you seem to

      have your finger on the pulse of perversion of integrity.

      I will support you and your ideas. As Janine suggested, you should

      have made a career in politics.

      You would make one hell of a president!

      So our government is taking over and we are often left with no ways out. There are lies and promises which never happen..and as you said so well it is the blame game and no taking responsibility...It is easy to blame others in our lives... We all know people who do not take responsibility for actions...I am always amazed at what is going on...and it keeps happening..and frankly it is a scary state of events... The entitlements go to the GOvernment...They never have to tighten their belts

      In that I have lived in both Vietnam and Mexico I found that both similarly declared independence from colonial tyranny and their declaration of independence is nearly the same.

      That tyranny that us three nations revolted against is back with a vengeance and stems from the same evils once expelled.

      Politics can be frustrating especially when it seems only to feed the ambitions (and the wallet) of a few, instead of the few taking care of the people they represent!

      It seems to work more or less the same way everywhere :-(

      A few years ago, Belgium was without a government for more than a year because the politicians couldn't agree on anything to even form the government ... maybe it was their best year!
