A Profitable And Convenient Myth

Updated on February 18, 2009

When I was a kid, we were told that the Brazilian rainforests and the Amazons were the lungs for the earth and the greatest producers of oxygen.  Due to this theory, the Amazon rainforests were an international asset that belonged to all mankind.  This theory was so prevalent and taught in schools that we implicitly believed it and propagated the myth.  Even certain atlases showed the Amazon as an international area.  Now, just for a moment imagine a theory that Alaska was considered that important and declared International property.  I have no doubt that the USA would immediately take action and protest in a big way.  The Amazons belong to Brazil and to nobody else.  Let us be absolutely clear about it.

Later I found out that most of the earth’s oxygen, in fact 70-80% was produced by algae, mostly marine where there are the largest concentrations of algae but also freshwater algae and land algae.  Yes the Amazons are important and we do need to save it but not at the expense of taking away its sovereignty from Brazil.

Today we face another myth that is again preached to children and in fact frightening children with the deadly consequences of global warming. It has become a great business, raking in tremendous profits, especially for its gurus.  I fully agree that our very precious planet must be protected and maintained just as we do our home, office, garden or factory.  Just as we have proper waste disposal and sewage treatment, we must not contaminate with toxic emissions our air, water and land.  Preaching is great indeed and very easy but how about practicing what you preach?  Instead, the global warming gurus hop around the world on their private jets, instead of flying commercial and leaving a smaller carbon footprint and charge up to US $250000 for a fifteen minute speech, all the while living in enormous energy guzzling houses, while preaching of dire consequences. Children are being frightened and some fanatic believers are shutting down their refrigerators to help lower their carbon footprint.

Global warming has become a new international religion. Now I am no expert but let us just look at this with common sense.  The universe is unimaginably enormous and our precious planet is not even a speck in it.  The earth has had constant cycles of warming and cooling, influenced by this enormous universe we are spinning in.  In fact if there had been no warming we may still be in the ice age.  Sun spots and sun flares all influence the climate of our planet.  A couple of large volcanoes blowing up in Chile and or Indonesia can easily create havoc with the climate of our planet.

There are just too many factors beyond our scope involved and our knowledge is indeed very sparse.  Yes ice cores from the Tundra, Antarctic and the Arctic, have shown certain tendencies and we tend to interpret them with the knowledge we have today.  Scientists, both great and brilliant are divided in their opinions on global warming.  Some argue for and others against.  Let us, however, be intelligent about this new Global Warming religion by loving and teaching our children to avoid waste and polluting.  We need not frighten them with a devastating global warming book of revelation.  Global warming has become a great business to some, while others are gullible enough to swallow everything they are told.  Instead of frightening our children, let us instead encourage our children to grow up to be responsible and innovative.  Let us tickle their minds to think of how energy can be harvested from the sun, wind and tides. They can be inventors of a new kind of battery concept or a new type of motor.  A teenager may look into cold fission etc.  Let us challenge their inquisitive and innovative minds instead of frightening them about the impending doom of this global warming hoax.

Children are our future.  They are our legacy.  Let us not allow our children to be frightened to death by spurious and selfish gurus who do not practice what they preach.  Let us teach our children to be responsible instead of afraid.  Global Warming is a convenient myth that has made millions for its gurus.  Global warming is not an inconvenient truth but a very profitable one.  Global warming has become a profitable and convenient myth.
