Anarchy begins when we deny human rights

So, another black athlete has opened his mouth and spoke up against gay-marriage. David Tyree, he of the helmet catch for the New York Giants that helped them defeat the undefeated New England Patriots in Super Bowl LXII, has said, “What I know will happen if this does come forth is this will be the beginning of our country sliding toward, it is a strong word, but anarchy." The problem with this statement is it begins with what I know. Apparently, Tyree does not know much. So let’s talk about that.

Let’s first consider the definition of anarchy: “a state of lawlessness or political disorder due to the absence of governmental authority.” Tyree is saying that countries where Gay Marriage is allowed will devolve into anarchy and a state of chaos. Is he right?

There are ten countries were same sex marriage is legal. They include: Norway, Sweden, The Netherlands, Canada, and Spain. Not much anarchy in those countries. There are several others where gay unions are recognized and they include: Denmark, The United Kingdom, Greece, Japan, and some parts of the United States. Japan had an earthquake and a tsunami and the country did not slip into anarchy.

Anarchy is borne of the denial of human rights. “A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual doom” is Dr. Martin Luther King’s idea of what brings on anarchy.Anarchy looks more like what happened in Los Angeles in 1965 and 1992. In 1992, I was on the street and there was no authority. Anarchy is more happens when people’s rights are trampled upon and their voice is not heard.

The countries where we have anarchy at this moment: Libya, Iran, Syria, Afghanistan, Yemen, China, Saudi Arabia and Iraq are countries where basic rights of liberty have been denied to innocent humans. These are countries that deny women basic rights, kill homosexual people, and terrorize those who do not follow religious dogma. Other chaotic nations include those in Africa where gay people are terrorized and even mutilated: Zimbabwe, Tunisia, and Somalia.

The truth is that Tyree does not know anything. He is parroting what he has been taught and history proves him wrong. Several of the most peaceful nations in the world already recognize same-sex unions. Tyree is just a pawn to an organization called National Organization for Marriage. They used him to counteract the recent support from many NBA and other sports athletes for gay marriage initiatives.

Tyree should have researched this issue before he spouted off on it. It is a good example of vain babbling; simply said, we should keep our mouths shut if we do not know of what we speak. You see Tyree is like many of us who seem to think that we can and should talk about subjects that we know nothing about. Using the word anarchy, even if you know it is a strong word, does not necessarily mean that you understand the word or its implications.

David Tyree knows how to catch a football and he should probably limit his opinions to that unless he learns to research before he speaks out.
