Eleven Ways to Show Kindness Daily

Updated on May 14, 2013

Show Kindness Daily

I have sometimes felt that maybe I don't do enough to help our world. I have not volunteered my time to charities nor given quantities of money to any specific group. I have had my share of problems and challenges like everyone else. I have not always been tolerant of other people. I have become angry and shown my feelings. I have been instrumental in breaking up personal friendships. I have refused to cook dinner...Just kidding on that one. However what I do on a regular basis is try to be kind to people in any way that I can. And I always give money to the Salvation Army bell ringers.

Billy Buc has offered a big challenge for random acts of kindness for an entire year. You must be a kind and good person 365 times. Hopefully twice in one day means you can skip a day. A little humor here, but it is serious business. People today are often rude and uncaring and give little concern to other's feelings. I am here to show you some really simple acts of kindness you can do almost everyday without even thinking.

Always Smile

Smile Often

Smiling at people requires no thinking. Smile at someone who needs a smile. Smile at someone who is frowning and watch what happens--they may smile in return. You can do this many times each day. I smile at everyone in the grocery store or any store for that matter. Next time at the grocery store and you see the checker looking harassed. give a big smile to make her feel everything is okay. Can you imagine if everyone would smile, we would certainly have a happy world.

Be Generous While Driving

Save yourself some aggravation and raising your blood pressure by not getting upset with careless drivers. If someone wants to pull in front of you let him. Drive carefully and watch the road without texting or talking on the cell phone. Be a courteous driver all the time. We would cut down on accidents if everyone would follow this advice. And also lower blood pressure. What does it matter if you get somewhere five minutes later. Try not to miss a plane. Just leave your house earlier if you are in a big hurry. Giving yourself extra time will make you and all your road mates very happy.

Call a Friend who has been having problems

During your busy day you may not want to listen to other's problems. If you are a good friend and have someone close to you who is dealing with some major challenges, make the call. Just listen to the friend, because more than likely he or she would just like to vent.

Help a Friend Clean their house or Work on A project

Volunteer to help someone clean a garage or storage room. I would have loved some help when cleaning my workroom and just to talk with. If you have a friend who is complaining about a dirty house and doesn't want to clean, just go over and help. Don't take no for an answer. You can put on the music, dance around and get in some good friendly gossip.

Tell someone you love them

Share some loving spirit. Call a family member or dear friend and tell them you are calling just to say. " I love you." Or get up out of your chair, go in the other room and share your loving feelings.

A bow makes a gift

Buy a small present

Receiving a gift is always so much fun, but giving one is even more rewarding. If you give someone a mug you are just giving the person a mug. If you wrap the mug and put some candy in the mug you create a gift.Deliver the gift to someone who needs some cheering up. No matter what you give always call it a gift and that person will feel like a million dollars.

A soothing massage

A Massage Gift Certificate

You must have a friend or family member who has been stressed out lately. Deliver or send a gift certificate for a soothing massage. Wouldn't you like to receive one? I would love to receive this and how thought it is.

A Cooked Meal for a Friend

Take a meal over to a Friend's House

Maybe you know someone who lives alone and rarely cooks. Call the person and tell them you made too much food and want to bring some of the glorious leftovers to their house. A busy person or one who is alone who doesn't have to cook dinner will be delighted. This act of kindness is especially appreciated during the holidays.

Make That Call

Make the Difficult Phone Call

You have had a disagreement with a friend and are still feeling a little angry. Make the call and work things out. You both will feel better about the issue and you will save a friendship. If you are not sure of the person's reaction, start with an email.

Say thank you or just thinking about you

Send A Personal Thank You Note

Send a personal thank you note even to tell someone you appreciate them. You can just say you were thinking of them. And they will know this is true because you took the time to write and also to mail.

Help a Friend with Their Pets

Adopt or Take Care of a Pet

Of course it is not always feasible to adopt a pet, especially if you already have one or two. Why not walk someone's dog for the day, or offer to watch the pet while they go out of town.

Great hub! People today are often rude and uncaring and give little concern to other's feelings. I totally agree with you. Like you mentioned, same goes for aggressive drivers. I agree with your points. Many people seem too busy or feel obligated to hear others troubles; however, by being a good listener, you can show your support to someone who is going through a difficult time. It's the small thoughts that count and it can really make someone's day.

      Really wonderful ideas.

These are small gestures we often forget to do.

I am sure when we offer to help somebody it improves our inner life.

Such a thoughtful and giving hub, here. I love all these suggestions on how to show kindness everyday. The one about cooking dinner for a friend is such a thoughtful gesture, in particular, if you know any seniors who live on their own and who have limited means. A casserole or something easily reheated is a lifesaver in cases like this. Wonderful ideas, Carol.

Wonderful hub. I have been in a bit of a funk lately. The stresses and woes created by the sluggish economy has put so much pressure on so many people. I notice fewer acts of kindness, and I think that pressure might be part of it. I am going to attempt to do something kind and selfless each day. I think it is so important, and I want to be a part of the solution, not the problem.

      Lovely, Carol.

Just the simple act of letting someone else know you are happy they are on the planet can mean so much. These things bring so much joy. When I was ill for 8 weeks with double pneumonia I was so humbled by the kindness others showed to my family and me. So having been on the receiving end of such kindness I know how much these gestures can mean to someone.

Awesome. Shared. Angels are on the way :) ps

I especially like your suggestion to make the phone call. Your suggestion to start with an email is a great idea. I find that putting things off doesn't make things go away and only adds to the irritation or anger. Wonderful hub overall and it will surely help many to live better and have positive relationships.

Lovely simple ideas Carol to move H.O.W. along. Sometimes the simplicity of remembering what type of chocolate someone likes, and giving it to them when they are under pressure, or feeling down, makes a huge difference to them. Voted up, interesting, useful and awesome!

Thanks for reminding us, carol, how easy it is to be nice to others. Especially smiling. It is so easy to do and costs us nothing. I like to follow this rule: when you see someone without a smile, give them one of yours. Works almost every time.

    • Billie Kelpin profile image

Billie Kelpin 4 years ago from Newport Beach

Lovely - sincerely! To this serious topic of being a noble person in the world, I'd like to add Billie's silly and mundane rules of showing kindness. (I'm thinking now of how a modern day George Washtington might write his Rules of Civility) Giveth another the gift of physical space: in line at the grocery store, standeth not so close to another as she should feeleth thy warm presence upon her neck; on the highway, leaveth enough space for a fellow driver to make important decisions. Always looketh into another's eyes while speaking and not upon whatsoever they might be wearing upon their feet nor at any piece of lint or errant particle that might be upon their clothing. Never raiseth thy eyes up and down while taking to a person as if in judgment. Speaketh not, nor looketh not upon Facebook on thy cell phone while dining with family or friends. Controleth thy volume of speaking when on public modes of transportation. Try to imagine walking around for a fortnight in another's boots so as to perfect the quality of empathy, the source of all kindness. (And above all, don't forget to laugheth at thyself often.)

Great tips Carol. I have done quite a bit of voluteerning in the past, not so much recently. I do remember I always felt that it was me that was benefiting more than those I was helping.

I love things that inspire people to be more kind. This world is sometimes sorely lacking in people who are not only not kind, but seem to struggle with being decent to one another. Our kind gestures can be like ripples that go out and out again. It is so true about a simple smile. Thanks for sharing this, I love it!

Carol, I love the contrast between the first paragraph and the great suggestions that follow. carol- I just love your honesty and appreciate the humor.. this is a beautiful hub and you are so right! I have noticed myself how people in general are not very concerned about others feelings. I really do always try to be polite to others and I guess this is why it surprises me so much. On the flip side I have encountered some truly kind souls out there and you have been one of those. This type of thing is what we need... each of us making a conscious effort to be kind. After all, I believe goodness always prevails. Happy New Years to you and yours!

Carol......Good job. This is a great list of simple, easy ideas for daily random acts of kindness. I wanted to bring up a point.....if you are like so many many people.....we do loving, kind things, quite often, that we're not even aware of.

Those are nice extras!..... I can't tell you how many times, someone has mentioned to me, how I had helped them with an issue, by something I said, or did.....how grateful they were when I did something that I barely remembered doing!

The lesson to us all here, is......often, just by being our trues selves, those around us are paying attention and receiving something positive in how we live our lives......Know what I mean??

The very NICEST, most touching thing ever said to me by a female friend was that I amazed her in my ability to see something good in everyone, no matter what. WOW...she took my breath away. The best part was that she was trying to BE that kind of person.

It had never occurred to me that I was inspiring anyone to do anything.....

In your own unique style, Carol, you too are making someone's life better, just be being YOU....UP+++

Great hub, Carol! Your tips for showing kindness are so simple, yet so meaningful. We really need to remember that life at times can be tough, and it's so helpful to others to show small kindnesses that remind the other person that they are not in it all alone. I particularly like your tips about courteous driving. I think a large part of being courteous behind the wheel is to always signal your intentions (lane changes, turns, etc.). This is important to improve safety and also shows your fellow drivers that they don't need to try to read your mind! Thanks for this inspiring article just in time for New Year's resolutions!
