Logic, Common sense, and the American Way

Updated on February 9, 2009

What a waste!

Why are we wasting so much money on useless stuff?  Oh yeah, I forgot, Obama has to pay back the 3/4's of a billion dollars he received from contributors to get elected.

Only we as taxpayers are the ones paying it back.  In one city they want to put a walkway across an interstate using stimulus money.  $168,000 for design and $1.8 million for construction.  How many people would that feed and clothe that really need help?  How many homes could be saved from foreclosure, for people that are at or near the poverty level?  How many homes could be rebuilt that were flooded last year or destroyed in tornadoes or hurricanes?

Why have we lost perspective and just spend money on crap we really don't need and not help those that truly need it?  Why are we willing to spend millions on the National Center for Arts while we have people that have lost their homes from natural disaster or fraudulent lending practices?

How much of the $800 billion plus is just plain a waste of money and really payola?  The Republicans did a tremendous job of doling out pork the past few years, but this "stimulus" package is making them look like pikers!  I'm pretty sure the voter didn't think that they voted in the Democrats just to spend more money!

We still need reform in Congress otherwise it will be business as usual. We have to keep their feet to the fire and remind them constantly that we can hire them and we can fire them.

      Thanks for coming by grinnin1!

You are right on the "money" here! Let's hope we can get somebody in who is a pragmatist and can see that there really is a relationship between what the government spends and our national debt! Keep writing!

Thanks for your comments pic! If the government would cut spending, we would feel more secure and would be willing to spend money on items that we are refraining from buying because of the uncertainty! You hit it right on the head!

Theoretically, spending is supposed to help the economy pull of the recession. Yes, jobs have been created -- but many jobs have also been cut. But what would help more is if the government cut spending; people might actually spend more that way.

RunAbstract, you are right! We spend just because we are brainwashed to whether we need to or not!

Accountability starts with each one of us and we have to hold our elected officials especially accountable!

Thanks for your comments and for stopping by!

envy_09, thanks for the parable and the kind words!

You are correct, no one wants to get their hands dirty or upset the apple cart, they might actually have to do something. Glad you stopped by!

salt, there is a lot of common sense in America, just not much in the media or the government!

You can have Obama, I'm sure he is a decent person, he is just not competent as President! If he would have waited a few years and paid his dues, he would have been much more successful and useful. I can not block him from anything. I'm just a "singer" in a rock n roll band. I have no political clout!

Thank you for taking the time to stop by!

I agree with you. We need a new type of leader. Our country is like a house that has been neglected for decades. Each new owner of that house keeps repainting the house, cleaning the windows, fixing up the garden. The house looks beautiful from the street. So somebody new buys it, steps inside only to find nothing but piles of rotting garbage from all the previous owners. So instead of actually fixing up the real problem, he goes out to work in the garden.

Thought I would try a little parable of my own. :-) Great collection of hubs!

      Right on!

But look at Americans in general... How much "crap" that we don't need do we buy personally?

The whole overspending on bullsh*t is a national disaster on the public, political, and personal level!!! We are a country so wrapped up in spending!

We gott'a look good, the parks have to look good, the roads have to look good... We are "keeping up appearances" in some places while other places are crumbling into ruin, ie: parts of Detroit!

I'm with you on this buddy. We need accountability, and way more done for the backbone of this country!

      Write on!

Thanks Glimmer for stopping by! We do not even know the half of what is stolen and wasted. What is worse is that they refuse to see it!

Stimulus? How about Dimandwitless. Great read Logic, it got my blood boiling. Too often it seems 'projects first and people second.'

      Thanks again.

The hub reflects your name. You question only internal expenses. Some Pakistani writers and administrators are trying to find out how much is the amount of contract past President Musharraf distributed to his friends- it seems to run in billion dollars. Most of it has come from USA of course!

With new administrations in both countries just try to guess how much it has multiplied.

Thank you for your kind words!

I do not know when many of the American people kicked common sense to the curb and decided that following the pack was the way they wished to go. Here on Hubpages I have found many that have not abandoned logic or common sense. I have found hope!

I totally agree with this hub. Everything that is going on with this government is making me crazy. It's like everything is out of control.

I saw your post on the Meaningful Songs forum that I started. I'm glad to see so many other people who music means a lot to, as it does to me.

I was intrigued by your hub name. I am a big fan of logic - actually, the formal study of it. Besides being a part of discrete mathematics, it is how I guide my thinking. There is so much out there that is illogical, and people don't even realize it.

cheryl, thanks for the comments. We have just seen the very tip of the iceberg as far as waste and misdirected funds go.

Great hub, I completely agree. All of these millions of dollars for "projects" yet the very school system that educates our future is being jacked of the simple basics. Why should teachers have to send out letters to parents for donations of tissue and paper? Why should our kids have to be placed in a class of 72 kids due to teacher lay-offs

when it should only be about 30? My son didn't attend summer school for the first time last year because there weren't enough funds to offer it. I believe there are some shady trillionare individuals at the bottom of it all as a whole, and unfortunately regardless if it was Obama, or McCain these roles would still play out. The presidents now as far as I'm concerned are simply puppets. There's much to learn!

The stimulus package.. you meant the spending package!!

The only thing it stimulated was a lot more debt!

If we must spend money we don't have - at least help someone with it..! Good post!

Do we really know what all is in the stimulus bill? What will we discover in the months to come? How much waste will we find has been paid to buddies of the people in power at this time?

Great hub logic - did you know that the legal basis for the "Death Panels" is established in the stimulus bill? Which just sailed right on in? What, exactly, is going on here?

Spending is out of control--the debt and deficit are out of control and it seems like it is only going to get worse under an Obama administration. We're in for a bumpy ride over the next 3.5 yrs. The good news is if he continues to devastate the economy with is 'hope and change', he will be a one term president.
