Reasons why Abortion is Wrong

Updated on May 28, 2013
Life is Precious
Life is Precious | Source

“One biblical principle of justice is that the more knowledge we have that our action is wrong, the more guilty we are, and the more deserving of punishment (Luke 12:47-48). The point of this blog post is that we know what we are doing—all America knows. We are killing children. Pro-choice and Pro-life people both know this.” – John Piper - Desiring God Blog

As a nation, we have the blood of innocent and defenseless babies on our hands through legalized abortion. It is an American Holocaust. Since the Supreme Court legalized it, we have slaughtered over 54 million babies in the womb. We arrogantly stand with righteous indignation at Adolf Hitler, who killed 6 million Jews and then as a nation proceed to slaughter 9 times more babies and call it a “woman’s right to choose.” I mean the slogan sounds great. Who can be against a woman’s right to do what she wants with her own body. It is a wonderful and effective emotional plea. However, that “choice” means stopping the beating heart of a little, innocent baby. Think about it. Thump, thump, thump, and then silence. As a society, we care more about protecting animals, whales, and trees more than protecting the life of an innocent baby. Michael Vick and some of his friends got caught running a dog-fighting ring and outrage came from every direction. Rightfully so, but where is the outrage over a baby that is murdered in its mother’s womb in the name of choice? My heart breaks for all of those precious little babies who had their lives snuffed out before they were born. My heart also breaks for all of the women who have been scarred as the result of having an abortion. The focus of this hub is not to condemn anyone who has had an abortion or paid for one. There is forgiveness available through Jesus Christ. Now let us take a look at why abortion is wrong.

Is Abortion Sin?

Life is Precious

The first reason why abortion is wrong is that life is precious and valuable because of who created it. Let us take a look at a few verses from the Bible to see what God has to say about life in the womb.

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” Jeremiah 1:5

“For you created my inmost being (soul); you knit me together in my mother’s womb.” Psalm 139:13

“Your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” Psalm 139:16

“As you do not know the path of the wind, or how the body is formed in a mother’s womb, so you cannot understand the work of God, the Maker of all things.” Ecclesiastes 11:5

“Thou shall not murder.” Exodus 20:13

“If men struggle with each other and strike a woman with child so that she gives birth prematurely, yet there is no injury, he shall be fined as the woman’s husband may demand of him, and he shall pay as the judges decide. But if there is any further injury, then you shall appoint as a penalty life for life.” Exodus 21:22-23

God says several times in the Old Testament that He formed us in our mother’s womb and knew us before we were born. We are created in His image. Each life that is snuffed out through abortion is a life that God created and loves. It is critical to remember that every abortion that is performed stops a heart from continuing to beat. Thump, thump, thump, and then nothing. The babies tiny heart goes silent as the baby dies inside of its mother's womb, where it should be the safest. What really gets me is that we are outraged when abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell kills a baby outside of the womb (not a partial birth abortion, fully outside of the womb) that survived a late term abortion that he performed, but do not show the same outrage when a baby is killed in the womb only a few weeks prior in development. As a society, we call that okay. The womb should be the safest place on the planet for a developing baby. If someone were to open abort puppies inside of a pregnant dog, PETA and the like would be all upset. Every baby's life is precious and worth saving.

Life is Precious

It is a Baby!

The second reason why abortion is wrong is because it is a baby that is developing and not some fictitious blob of tissue. As John Piper said in the quote above, everyone knows what we are doing. We can lie to ourselves and say that it is not human or it is just a blob of tissues, but it does not change the fact that what is developing in the womb is a human baby that has its own unique DNA at conception. Here are some amazing facts about a baby’s development in a mother’s womb:

  • Gender is determined at conception.
  • A baby’s heart begins to beat 18 days after conception.
  • The baby’s backbone, spinal column, and nervous system are formed 3 weeks after conception.
  • By the fifth week, the hands, legs, and eyes begin to develop.
  • Brain waves become detectable 6 weeks after conception.
  • The baby begins to kick and swim after 7 weeks.
  • By the eighth week after conception bones begin to form, the baby can now hear, and fingerprints begin to appear on the babies fingers.
  • By the tenth and eleventh week, all organ systems are fully functioning and the baby can now grasp objects placed in its hand.
  • Three months after conception, the baby can feel pain and suck its thumb.
  • After four months in the womb, a baby will be between 8 and 10 inches in length and weigh around a half a pound.
  • Babies can regularly survive outside of the womb at 19 weeks or 4 ½ months.

Over the remaining 4 ½ months the baby will continue to grow and develop. Praise God for Ultrasound technology that allows a glimpse into a woman’s womb, we can see the picture evidence of how this “so-called blob of tissue” is really a baby. Look at ultrasound pictures at different stages of development if you do not believe me. It becomes quite clear very early on in development that this is so much more than a blob of tissue. The pictures reveal that life is precious. It is a dishonest argument to deny it.

Margaret Sanger - Racist Founder of Planned Parenthood

The Truth about Planned Parenthood

This is not a direct reason of why abortion is wrong, but it is an indirect one that must be mentioned. Planned Parenthood is the leading abortion provider in the world but did you know that it was founded by eugenics advocate Margaret Singer who saw abortion as a way to limit the number of minorities. She believes in an elite race, kind of sounds a lot like Hitler to me. Unfortunately see has succeeded beyond her wildest dreams. One in two African American pregnancies ends in abortion. In fact, the largest percentage (37%) of all abortions performed is on African American babies. What is even sicker is that Planned Parenthood receives funding from the government to murder babies. They will say that the money funds other programs, but as an accountant let me say that this is just an accounting gimmick. It may be recorded against other services, however, the increase in funds allows Planned Parenthood to transfer other funds to provide abortions to kill babies. Where is the outrage over our government giving money to Planned Parenthood?

Planned Parenthood Endorses Partial Birth Abortion

The Truth about Partial Birth Abortion

Partial birth abortion is a gruesome procedure that can only be performed later than 19 weeks. As we discussed above, a baby has a decent chance to survive outside of the womb at 19 weeks (4 ½ months). What is partial birth abortion you ask? It is aptly named because the procedure involves a partial birth. The baby is pulled all the way out of the mother’s womb feet first except for the head. If the head were to make it all the way out, it would be protected by law as a BABY. The abortionist punctures the baby’s head with a surgical instrument and proceeds to vacuum the brain out of the skull through a catheter tube, which causes the skull to collapse. Then the head is pulled the rest of the way out and the body is discarded as trash. Remember that a baby can feel pain only three months after conception. How would you like to have your brains sucked out and without any pain medication. The sad thing is that there is no reason medically to ever have a partial birth abortion procedure except that it is a quick and easy way to kill the unborn baby. I do not understand why those babies are just not fully removed from the mother alive and then given up for adoption since they are viable babies. Where is the outrage over partial birth abortion?

What Can We Do?

As a country, we are in grave danger of the judgment of God falling on us. We need to humble ourselves and pray. We need to repent of our personal and national sins, including abortion. We need to seek the face of God and plead with Him to send a national revival and to remind all of us that life is precious. Roe vs. Wade will only be overturned by the changing of people’s hearts and minds. We also need to elect politicians that are pro-life and hold their feet to the fire. Support your local crisis pregnancy center as they are on the front lines fighting the battle to save the lives as babies. We can learn how to argue successfully against the pro-abortion arguments. Lastly, we can talk to our friends, family, and neighbors about why abortion is wrong.

The dirty little secret that no one ever says anything about is that Norma McCorvy, aka Jane Roe, never had an abortion and she is now standing up and fighting against the case that made her famous. Remember, abortion always stops a beating heart.

Do you believe it is okay to stop a baby's heart from beating?

I don't believe many people doubt that abortion is morally wrong, I certainly don't, but that is never the question, the question is what is the greater of the two evils, abortion or using government power to force a woman to give birth against her will and the resulting backrooms abortions and deaths of mothers, not to mention the practical impossibility of such a task women cannot be forced to go to term and if they are they can't be forced not to drink or partake of things that would kill or harm the fetus.

Given the fact that it is impossible to prevent by banning, has terrible consequences and establishes a dangerous precedent for governmental power being enforced on one's person it's obvious that legalized abortion is the lesser of two evils hence why the vast majority of the population support that.

Hello ERCramer, I just read your Hub on abortion and I have to make a comment, on Nov. 08, 2011 I put a hub on here, "If Wombs Had Windows How Many More Babies would Be Alive Today?" It has been on here every since and I had 27 views and no comments. I was sure that there would be more people than that interested i n it. I hope that you are more fortunate with your Hub. I will keep an eye on it and see how it goes over now. Thank you for putting it on here , Clara Kish

Personally, I am on the fence on this matter, and no matter what people may argue, my middle ground stance won't change. My question is though for those pro-abortionists is why is life only a life at what, 8 weeks in the womb, or however late it is? In my opinion, I believe that life should be considered a life at the moment of conception, not when the cells have formed enough to make a coherent humanoid shape (again, sorry if I haven't got that argument completely correct). So if you are pro-abortion, you cannot argue that you aren't killing a life because it isn't one, because ultimately, you are. If cells at the time of conception were found on a planet that isn't earth we would consider it 'alien lifeform', so it should be the same for ourselves (but human lifeforms).

To counter this though to make a fair argument, there are compelling arguments for abortions, like abnormalities in the womb or known problems in life, etc...

But as I said, I am completely on the fence.

Obviously lives are precious but like many humanitarian arguaments, the Writer of this Hub uses strong, emotive language to condemn abortion which obviously strikes a chord within many readers. However, that baby is just that...a baby. Will it feel pain? Possibly,I don't know,it seems not. Will it be an act of injustice? Well if this is the mother's wish, it would seem injust not to.I know it seems unethical but if the mother does not feel that she is able to look after her child-maybe the right thing to do is return the child to its maker.

Thanks Josak for your comments. If I follow your reasoning, that sense we cannot stop a woman from murdering her own baby because of she could obtain a back room abortion, then can I not assume that you are okay with the murdering of anyone since it is already illegal and yet we cannot stop people from doing it? Logically, that is where your argument goes. Just because we cannot stop people from doing something, does not mean we should condone it.

The second argument that you make is simply ridiculous. The government forces people to wear seat belts in their cars, many states require people to wear helmets on motorcycles, and thanks to Obamacare, we all have to have health insurance. Protecting a life should rate higher than all of these. Abortion is the tip of a very slippery slope. The next stop down the track is death panels when the government decides who deserves to have healthcare and who is too expensive and will be allowed to die. In 99.999999% of the cases, the woman made a choice to have unprotected sex. There are consequences to doing that, namely you could very well get pregnant. If I choose to rob a store, there are consequences for that.

Thirdly, all of the polls the last few years that list the percentage for and against abortion have hovered around 55% against it. Take a moment and step back from that for a second. If something is wrong, it is wrong no matter how many people are okay with it. Right and wrong are not governed by the will of the people. Murder is wrong. Killing a baby in the womb is wrong.

Thanks Kish! I am sorry to hear about your hub not getting many views. I agree with your premise that if wombs had windows, many more babies would be alive today. It is a shame that we have sunk to such a low and cannot even guarantee the safety of a baby in its mother’s womb. It breaks my heart and God’s heart.

Thanks for your comments Joe. I totally agree with you that life begins at conception. What amazes me, is the government protects the eggs of endangered species, but not a human baby in the womb. It does not make any sense.

My problems with arguments like abnormalities in the womb is that the tests run by doctors could be wrong. I know of several different cases where a test showed Down Syndrome and when the baby was born it was completely healthy. I personally know of several people who have taken babies to term that had developmental issues and loved the baby the brief time that they had it. Who are we to play God and decided when a life should end?

Thanks for your comments Aaron. There is ultrasound evidence that babies do indeed feel pain during an abortion procedure. Second, the mother is not God. If she cannot take care of the baby, she should have thought about that before having unprotected sex and she can always give the baby up for adoption. No one is forcing her to raise the baby. We get ourselves into a lot of trouble when we try to play God and we are not God. If I continue your argument out, what happens if a mother of a 2 year old cannot take care of him or her? Should we send them back to their maker? What about a teenager?

I can't give a sound argument against ultrasound. You must be right then-the baby DOES feel pain. However the problem with modern society today is that people DON'T think, unfortunately, and selfishly have unprotected sex.A fair consequence of that would be being scarred for life from the abortion process, do you not think? And, I know this sounds spadish but sometimes you have to do things for the greater good.Perhaps in America, conditions are better but in Britain the National Health Service, the Public education system and Public Transport is majorly strained by the sheer amount of people that live here as it is.If abortion were made legal then the population would increase enormously. My side is this:if the mother agrees that she does not want a child then-despite this sounding incredibly mercenary-the child should be aborted, as long as the child is still in the womb.Otherwise yes, if the mother has given birth then 100% the child should live.Sometimes one has to be cruel to be kind.

ercramer36, After seeing the reasons to kill the babies that God was sending I just have one question to ask the mothers, doctors ,nurses and all who are involved in this law being passed to kill those little ones. On Judgment Day when you stand before The Lord and He asks you about the little babies He had sent, what is your answer going to be? Don't forget that He has the power to hand you over to Satan! I don't know where to begin....your 'hub' is so thought provoking, not because it is necessarily a new argument or progressive dilemma but rather a greater debate of our era- the need for choice with a lot of disregard for innocent life.

I am for gay marriage. Didn't use to be, but I stepped back and saw the discrimination as well as the hatred and fear. I was a proponent of equal rights as far back as the late 70's-be it rights for women, minorities, etc. One thing that never wavered in my resolve-to protect our babies. I guess I never understood how liberation could mean the discarding of human life, how independence excused murder by choice. There are people out there ready and willing to take that human life and love it as their own. I know- I did just that. She has been the brightest blessing God could ever bestow on one couple. I can't even imagine my life without my daughter. A woman made a difficult choice at a dark time in her life. She couldn't care for her baby. I could. Simple as that. If she would have chosen to kill her 'mistake', my hometown would have missed the laughs, the talent, and the friendship my daughter has given our neighbors and strangers she meets on a daily basis as well as the teachers that actually thanked me for putting my daughter in their class. My life would have gone on, but without my baby -less defining, less enriched, and most of all lacking the experience and joy my husband and I have had in watching that 'mistake' grow into a young woman with a penchant for laughing, listening to music and enjoying life. Thank you for your hub.

WOW so powerful, simple, straight forward...abortion is always emotional in the debate..if you are pro-life you hate women...rubbish if you are pro-life you want to protect women and the child...God created us and knew us long before we were even conceived..God Bless You..I pray every day for the national revival, the fire of the Holy Ghost..I live in San Francisco the world revival is beginning right here, right now!!!

I think the comment you quote from John Piper tells the real story - everybody really knows what we are doing. People push aside their knowledge that a baby is being killed, but that doesn't change the reality. Thanks for a good hub.

I am oftentimes baffled at campaigns for; Save the Whales, Save the Elephants, and all other endangered species but yet we can watch our babies be extinguished at the behest of their parents , at times, simply due to a lack of interest in investing in their lives. I'm not an opponent of these causes, just confused at the irony.

      Irish Shrew,

I could not agree more. People are more willing to defend a rat, tree, or whale, then they are a human life. It just does not make any sense. I heard a preacher say last week that how can we dare to call ourselves a Christian nation and continue to wipe out millions upon millions of defenseless babies.

This is simply not a debate of who is right vs. who is wrong. This isn't an excuse to highlight one's self-proceeded self-righteousness. This is a topic that should be delivered in a sincere and delicate way to provoke awareness and to help protect these unborn babies from such a devastating disaster. I can completely appreciate and respect your stance on the matter. I just think as a human-being(especially those who consider themselves to be religious) would be wrong and hypocritical to condemn these women who suffered the loss. I am not Pro-Choice, I think Abortion is too sad and unfortunate and I wish it wasn't even an option, but it is. It would be unfair of you and people of your mindset to divide women who never had abortion vs. women who had an abortion. Everyone's life, circumstances, choices, suffering...is unique to our own. It would be unfair to label the women who chose an abortion as Evil, when we do not live in their shoes and do not fully understand their circumstances. What I mean by this is...a lot of females out their who chose the abortion may have been to naive, confused, scared, troubled, lost, unaware of the gravity their decision carried. So they reluctantly went thru the act, only to realize with a little time, wisdom, sorrow, and experience that what they had done was awful and they deeply wish they could take it back. They wish they could have their babies back, but they can't. They must live with the decision and regret forever. and be stoned by people who are no better no worse than they. We are equal, we are all connected. Had someone genuinely tried to help them or get thru to them, a life could have been saved. Sure, I would assume their are women out their who have countless abortions, and may not feel much grief over it. That is shameful. I'm just standing up for the women/girls who were scared and didn't know any better expressing the point that we as human-beings can be very cruel and insensitive when it comes to judging others.

"Let he who is free from sin cast the first stone"

Like I stated, I think we need to re-direct our energies from ridiculing people who experienced an abortion to enlightening women who may be contemplating one in a sincere caring passionate way. Some of these women really don't want to go thru with it, their instincts warn them to not commit the act, but they do anyway...WE need to help these women and the precious entity's that lie within their womb. Simply stating the do's and don'ts are not sufficient enough. If we can save at least one life(hopefully an abundance) from the deadly fate, mission accomplished.

p.s. My approach is behind the women/mothers who aborted their child or thinking about it. NOT the "doctors" who perform the procedure.
