Roland Burris

"Senator" Roland Burris
"Senator" Roland Burris

The election of President Barack Obama ushered in a new era of politics into America. The new tone was to be transperency and openess. With the selection of Roland Burris to the United State Senate in President Obama's former seat by disgraced former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, President Obama's message of change in being undermined. For this and many other reasons, Roland Burris should resign for the good of the Country. And if he continues to refuse to resign from office, Roland Burris should be impeached from office.

Because Burris is tied to Rod Blagojevich, his image and his seat are tainted.

Burris Undermines the President's Message of Change

To remind everyone, Burris was appointed to the Senate Seat he now holds by former Illinios Governor Rod Blagojevich. Rod Blagojevich is now under federal investigation for trying to sell the very Senate Seat Burris holds. Burris admitted in recent days that he did, in fact, try to raise money for Blagojevich in exhange for the appointment. At the very least, Burris was less than forthcoming with investigators and government committees when he said he had no improper contact with Rod Blagojevich.  At the most, Burris was complicit with Blagojevich and is guilty of federal election laws.

Burris is tainted. Nobody, and I mean nobody, takes him seriously in the US Senate. Can you imagine if Burris actually tried to get something done? Instead, we have another politician stuck in neutral because of corruption and dishonesty. This directly contradicts the message of the man Burris is supposed to be replacing. Because Burris is there, it undermines Obama's attempts to clean corruption out of Washington. The Symbolism of the man sent to replace Obama being corrupt deflects and hurts Obama's image, the image of his State, the US Senate and the government as a whole. It is time for him to go.

Burris gives commentators like Sean Hannity the ability to attack whether "change" that we can beleive in has come to America.

Burris Takes Attention Away From The Real Problems of the Day and Gives The Right A ScapeGoat To Deflect Attention Away From The Real Issues.

Not only does Burris undermine President Obama's message of change, Burris deflects attention away from the real issues of the day and gives Fox News and other opponents of the President's agenda ammunition to fire at the President's policies. Not only this, Burris' press conferences and admissions fills up space on every news outlet about him, the corruption and whether "change" really has come to America. Just like President Clinton's infidelity deflected attention away from Islamic Terrorism in the late 90s, Burris takes attention away from the economic crisis, the fact that Pakistan has allowed the Taliban to take over some power and the other real issues of the day. I am not saying the media attention is right in giving Burris the time they do, but it is getting much of the attention. As such, Americans are not getting other relevent information they need and instead are forced to watch another circus. It is time for his to go.

If Burris doesn't resign, can these two actually show they have the guts to do what is right?

He Refuses To Resign

Senator Burris: Resign.

Many that know Roland Burris state that he is a good man. But at this point, does it matter? He is tainted. He is fuel for a fire to destroy President Obama's agenda. He is a joke and filling one of one hundred seats in the Senate.

And he must know it. For the good of the Country, Burris must resign. He must allow the people of Illinios to take back the seat in which a Governor tried to sell for his own personal financial benefit. He must resign to give the people of Illinios two Senators who are taken seriously and who can advocate on their behalf. He must resign so the story can change from corruption and greed to the economy and homeland security.

And if he doesn't resign, the Democratic Party will have to do something it hasn't done in a long time, actually stand up and fight for what is right. Nobody likes getting rid of their own, but if the Democrats in Congress or in Illinios want to show that they too beleive in change, then a public dismissal of a tainted Senator is a good place to start. It is time for him to go.

Roland Burris is still in the Senate and everyone seems ok with it.

Roland Burris Is Still There

Well, here it is the end of April 2009, and Roland Burris did not resign.  He did not get impeached.  In fact, Roland Burris has fallen off the Radar.  Given the economic hardships and foreign threats facing the nation, once Burris got his seat in the United States Senate the country simply forgot about him.

So now the question is:  What are you going to do with your Senate seat Mr. Burris?  I hope you use it to do good and makes us all forget how you got there in the first place.  Those who knew you before said that you are a good man; let's hope so.

Update July 09, 2009

Senator Roland Burris announced today that he will seek re-election to the Senate.  While this may finally put an end to this ordeal, Burris will be remember as a man who obtained his seat through dishonest means (although he apparently did nothing wrong) and accomplished nothing while sitting in the Senate.

Should Roland Burris Stay In His Senate Seat?
