   Why is it not morally and legally OK to let a person sentenced to death end himself in dignity?
   
   When dismissed from a company for a crime, my employer allows me to leave in dignity. They do not throw me out like dirt. When sentenced to death for a crime, why cant they allow me to commit suicide in dignity rather than hang me on their noose?

   I believe that part of the punishment is the loss of choice or control.  When all control is lost, and your most important choice, the end of your life, is taken out of your hands, it can cause great suffering.  If you have taken someone else's life, which means that they had no choice, then you should not have any choice either.

   If you have a taken a life? Your victim or victim's had no choice, their life was in your hands. You were the Judge and jury. Now a real Judge and jury has decided you must be put to death. They did not decide your fate. You did that when you committed the heinous crime. Yes, I say heinous because that is what it takes to get the death penalty. If someone does take another life, I hope they think about that execution date everyday for the many years it takes to finally put them to death. Plus, you take one life, how many other lives have you affected that has to live without their loved ones knowing how they were taken from this world.

      JThomp42 based on your past writings, I think to believe in the sanctity of life. Innocent people have been freed because of DNA test results, or a witness admitting they lied. Do we really want to execute people or imposed mandatory suicide?

   I think the condemned's right to dignity went out the window as soon as the crime was committed.  There is no dignity in committing a crime in the workplace or in society.  If a person wants to commit suicide, they will find a way.

      DNA has proved convicted felons to be innocent. Are you going to abolish the appeal system and throw the advances of DNA out the window so that a convicted criminal can kill himself or be forced to kill himself. Innocents have been executed.

   I am inclined to let the guilty person dispose of themselves if they have accepted their guilt and shown remorse. In that circumstance, the person has at least been accountable.
   
   However, where a criminal appeals endlessly, protesting their innocence, wastes tax-payers money to eventually exhaust all those avenues, they have lost their right to express any control over their lives.
   
   It is interesting to note that no comments have been made yet opposing the death penalty in its entirety.

   For example, to be allowed to commit suicide for a Samurai was something of Honor. And it required permission. There is Honor in Death and those who live without Honor will generally meet their Death without Honor. Hence, a Warrior always has his/her Last Dance: Live in Honor - Die with Honor.

   Taking your own life is a horrible act, worse than being sentenced to death because they ended it themselves. But by taking their own life, they are cheating those who they harmed out of witnessing or succeeding by knowing they died on the terms of society.

   First, you have to consider the morality of the death penalty. I oppose it. There is always room for error, especially with the use of DNA. Many people on death row do make their peace with God and upon execution are headed to a better place. Thus, I think life imprisonment is a greater punishment than execution. If forces the person to remember the event that led to his conviction and it also provides the opportunity that if new evidence is found, he may be released because he was not guilty of the crime in the first place.
   
   Next, if  you allow the person to kill himself, you would still have to set a time and place. He just could not be allowed to do it at his own time within his cell. If he is not successful, the law would require that he be treated and healed before allowing to take his own life.
   
   Finally, if you do accept the death penalty, it is a penalty handed down by the state--i.e., the people. It cannot be compared to losing your job. If be sentenced to death means you have probably killed someone and the state is the one to determine the time, place and method of execution.
