I'm watching the news as people are continuing to suffer in New York , New Jersy ........Yet the media shows an occassional picture or video , while people are dumpster diving and suffering intensely ? There is another storm working its way up the coast for next week , possibly a nor-easter on wednesday , a foot of snow on top of Sandy ?
Ed, I am hearing many glowing reports of FEMA' s work on this storm, starting with Gov Christie and right now this morning am hearing residents of the affected areas talk about the reponse very positively. These are the lessons learned from inaction in previous storms.
There are many mixed reports coming from the region. Reports of people egging relief line crews, NJ turning awy linemen from Alabama because they are non union, Bloomberg diverting resources away to get the marathon ready which has since been cancelled. These things have nothing to do with a President or FEMA.
The comment of learning from slow responses of the past shows someone who is not informed or does not understand how these situations work. All a President can do is to declare an area a disaster area, de[ploy the national guard and FEMA. After that all he can do is console and sign appropriations bills to fund the recovery if there are any such requests. In both Sandy and Katrina, both were done in advance of the storm hitting.
After that it is in the hands of the local states and cities. They direct FEMA and the federal assets where needed. NY and NJ appear to be doing OK, In LA. during Katrina, the Governor and Mayor were working against FEMA ad made it difficult for them to help. As a result, both were voted out of office in their next election
I know people like to blame the President for a lot of things, but in this instance, they do not have as much power as many think they do. .
Muy comment about slow responses from the past was the Attboy Brownie days of W and there was a slow to no response due to mismanagement.
Again, you are looking in the wrong place. Bush signed the disaster order 2 days before Katrina hit. Do you think if he signed it a month earlier it would have made a difference? Take an honest look at where the real problems and interference came from.
The problem statted with his appointment of an incompetent manager for FEMA. Brown was a big political contributor, no experience in emergency management and left under a cloud. Read the literature.
Christie is no friend of Obama and praises the President's response, despite sideline critics who mistake opinion for fact.
the president has a lot of power in this situation but he is too busy campaigning for his life . the people who say he can't do anything are the blind supporters who refuse to see the president do anything wrong . The people who say that New Jersey is ok aren't there . I don't know what they are looking at but I watch television a lot and thats not what I have seen . If you look through the democratic ROSE colored glasses it is ok. ..What an inane statement that is . These people are desperate for water and food and HELP.. But Obama is in campaign mode , he got his photo op.. he got his Presidential Moment . now back to pulling the wool over Americans eyes. No leadership .. . Tell it like it is .. he can't handle the job of being a leader he is a campaigner in chief.!
Cleaner,
You should do your research before attacking someone. I am an independent but if you read my articles you would see my opinion of this President. The one thing I do not have is rose colored glasses, I see it and call it as it is. Yes he got his moment and went back to campaigning, but he does not have the power you think he has. He has already put in place all he can, at this time he can only respond to requests as they come in.
I have to disagree with one thing here ! President Obama has the power to do anything--- right now ! Money is not an issue , Food is available and so is power . He does have the power to hasten the rescue , bring in the entire power of the most advanced military in the world , Allocate as many helicopters , hospital ships , and unlimited resources ! Yet he choses to just campaign ! Good for him though , lets see where it gets him !
Sad how some need to turn this into something it isnt.
Facts is that right now in New York and New Jersey all you see are people coming together.

"Tottenville's memory wall of found items keeps growing. Amazing to see ppl come together."
Note to OP - Instead of talking politics while people in NY, NJ etc are hanging by a thread why not Focus on lending a helping hand instead.

"On Wednesday, New Jersey Senators Frank R. Lautenberg and Robert Menendez asked President Obama to dispatch supplies of gasoline and fuel to the state. Obama promptly responded, directing the Department of Defense (DOD) to assist in transporting much needed supplies to the area. An order to truck in 24 million gallons of fuel to the region was also issued. As reported on Digital Journal, tanker trucks were seen arriving in areas of New Jersey Saturday morning."
"The administration had also ordered FEMA to have supplies ready for deployment at a staging area on Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst near Trenton, New Jersey. Trucks loaded with blankets, generators, food, water and other supplies began arriving at the base on Oct. 26th."

NJ Governor Chris Christie, who as recently as a week ago was a harsh critic of Obama's leadership has a new BFF: Barack Obama. He's been effusive (some believe TOO effusive) in his praise for the POTUS and his handling of Sandy, going on numerous news shows. So what do you think his motives are?...

Does Barack Obama hate white people?A lot of people who are suffering from Hurricane Sandy are white people and all Barack Obama did was visit for a photo op and then go back to campaigning. It's been two weeks and a lot of people are still homeless or don't have power.

How did President Obama get the scar on his skull?A few times over the last months when the President is on television I've noticed a scar on his skull. A friend suggested he may have had an accident in his youth but I haven't heard about any accident he experienced so am still curious. Does anyone...

It appears to me that the torture issue, as Frank Rich observed in today's NY Times, is "bigger" than Obama. Rich's Op-ed provides a concise summary of where the issue currently stands. In my opinion, Obama had better get out from in front of the train! Here's a link to Frank Rich's...
