I haven't looked at your link, just as a disclaimer.

This is the thing though, this happens millions of times a year. People protect themselves, and they protect others. That isn't nearly as sensational for news as 'XX children murdered!'.

For example, one college student was hanging out with 7 other friends. Two guys in masks with guns broke into their apartment, herded everyone together, and stole all their valuables. Then they pulled out some duct tape and said they were going to tie everyone up, rape the girls, and then kill everyone.

This student had a carry permit, but didn't want to risk gunfire over a robbery. When the situation escalated, he pulled his gun, and IIRC killed one of the intruders and wounded the other who ran away.

That's not nearly as good of a story for the media as '8 college students raped and murdered' would have been.

Perhaps if you had looked at the link your comments would have been more pertinent.  The person with the carry permit did not intervene.  So they were not involved in how things played out.

Maybe he intervened, maybe not.  The inference was that the shooter saw him, with a gun aimed and ready.  Whereupon the shooter gave up and killed himself because of that "intervention"

We'll never know why the shooting stopped but seeing an armed man ready to shoot possibly play a part.  It would seem to be a very slim possibility to me, but it is possible.

There is no maybe.  He didn't.  His own report is that he did not act and the gunman did not see him.  So while this might be an element in many cases, it was not in this case.
