I'm surprised this is a surprise to anyone.    It was the first thing that occurred to me when I heard about the scheme - sure, old cars aren't fuel efficient, but making new cars to replace them would surely consume  far more energy than was saved?   I hadn't even thought about the environmental nightmares caused by disposing of the old cars.

Cash for clunkers was all about keeping the car industry going, and nothing else.
