Just spend time with them, talking to them and finding out how their lives were different from theirs now.  Perhaps playing cards, or scrabble, or taking them for a walk or shopping.  There are many things that can be fun for both parties, and it helps the youth understand the world  and his family and people in general.

the youth bring an element of unpredictability, freshness and companionship into the lives of the elderly.

It also brings them hope that the future generations are in fact still grateful to their predecessors and realize the value of a human life even beyond its ability to, maybe, provide any tangible value.

Bottom line - At a time of solitude, anyones life would be brighten up by some social interaction.

They need to be treated as though they are not a burden. In the past old people were a source of wisdom, they lived in the house with the family ... in these selfish times we treat them like a weight around our necks which is grossly unfair. Just treat them like you would another friend and they'll be eternally greatful... buy them sweets too, old people love sweets!
