    are vigilantes ever justified?

if someone killed a loved one but got off on a technicality would it be justified for a person to hand out justice themselves?

Yes. If you actually saw the person kill your loved one. There could be no room for doubt.
If this were indeed the case, I would shoot the bastard dead and happily take my jail time.

vigilance committees have existed throughout history and received legal sanctioning :

In some ways this is what the Obama Administration and the Justice Department is called Arizona in their attempt to enforce immigration laws within that state.  Given the fact that the federal government does not either seem capable or interested in fixing the border issue, would you not agree that Arizona'a action might be justified for the safet of its own people? I suppose it depends who you're trying to justify the killing to. Sometimes an action is necessary, even if the law of the land forbids it. I personally would kill the killer without a second thought, but would not think I could or should get away with it, that would just propogate the faults of the legal system.
