Are discrimation and segregaton that same thing
are they the same?
No, they're not the same, though segregation is part of discrimination in the "ism" sense. Segregation is simply the act of setting apart -- in the historical context for the US, it was part of discrimination in that there was a point in time where public facilities, utilities, and institutions were divided by those meant for whites and those meant for blacks. Many different countries have similar examples.
Discrimination, on the other hand, can and does occur without segregation, and (in the sense that I assume the question was meant considering the pairing of words) means to treat someone different based on race, religion, gender, etc. Take, for instance, an employer who hires people from all races, but who gives the poorer jobs to a particular ethnic group simply because of their heritage. The people in the workplace are not segregated, but there are some who are certainly discriminated against.
Discrimination is the denial of opportunities and equal rights to individuals and groups because of prejudice or for other arbitrary reasons.
Segregation is the physical seperation of two groups, oftenimposed on a suborinate group by the dominant group.
