It varies depending on economics and what's going on in the different cities within a state. We generally look at cities, not states. But I recently saw a list of the top crime cities right now and the top few were in Michigan, for obvious economic reasons. This may or may not make Michigan the most violent state at this time, but I'm sure when their economy improves it will change.
The most violent state in North America is Mexico. The most violent state in the US is probably The District of Columbia which isn't a state but does have the highest murder rate. Michigan is also ranked high for violent crime.
