Is Iran known as Iran or Persia outside of the United States and why the two names?

    Persia sounds so much better.

Iran is officially known as the Islamic Republic of Iran. Persia and Iran are sometimes used interchangeably, but "Iran" is how it's used in political and diplomatic circles. Persia is an antiquated name, used internationally up until the early part of the last century.

Persia; was the name when the region was part of the British Empire and stayed for some time after It encompassed much more than Iran. Take a look at a 1950s map.
When I was a child in school Persia was still the name for the region.
Before the British there was the Persian Empire which was even bigger. Look at some maps from the 1700s, 1800, and so on to see how things changed.
