How long must you be restricted from donating blood aftter you no longer get cold sores?

More than twenty years ago I was restricted from giving blood because I had a cold sore on my face. They said some baby might receive that blood and their breathing would be impaired. So obviously I refrained from donating blood. But I wonder about how long I need to do this.

You need to refrain from donating blood until all symptoms of the cold sore(s) or whatever health condition is an issue, have ended.

For up-to-date information or opinions about American Red Cross rules about Blood donor deferrals, call 1-800-448-3543.

If you have cold sores from the herpes virus, they will never really "go away". you have it for life, like a fourth of the population.
