How should Americans care for and help heal our mentally ill citizens?
By ensuring they have adequate access to professional psychologists, and also by not ostracizing them for something beyond their control.
The same way it was done 50 years ago. Through church & civic organizations. (CHARITY) Forcing everyone to "pay" through taxation is socialism. Name one person who was not taken care of in the "old way". Charity is an act of compassion, taxation is an act of tyranny.
The best way, I think is to combined the suggestions of Sooner28 and Guesser. My son received a head injury in a near fatal accident. He had brain surgery. A lot of people were praying for him. He survived the surgery and the first night. Earlier that day, the doctors were not optimistic.
After surgery there was therapy. It was a big help. He has some issues to deal with but his survival is a miracle.
Sooner28 makes one other excellent point, people who are mentally ill should not be ostracized. People with any physical or mental impairment should be treated with respect. I had my share of grief as a child because of a speech impediment. Kids were tough, but almost every adult thought he was a speech therapist and were always doing an exaggerated pronouncing of the word and then tell me to try it, but talk slower. It did not work. I got some decent therapy in college. Still have some problems, but science, kindness and prayer has always worked for me.

I want to get people's views on this. The thread's inspired by comments I've seen from people in and outside of this forum that suggest taxes are theft. The idea goes: if the government forces people to pay taxes (under threat of imprisonment) then they are essentially stealing people's money by...
