Could Ronald Reagan get the Republican nomination today?
I am not talking about the idealized Ronald Reagan that we often hear about today, but the real Ronald Reagan--the one who was a union president, who raised government deficit spending to previously unknown levels, and the one who raised taxes several times, including one in an attempt to help that socialist program known as Social Security.
Nope, he served his two terms so Mr. Reagan's eligibility is up!
I was imagining that he had not served two terms. If Ronald Reagan came on the scene for the first time in the past two years, could he have gotten the nomination?
Why not, we're just as stupid today as we have always been.
Not unless he decided to sign Grover Norquist's fantastical No New Taxes Pledge. Considering that Reagan raised taxes when he had to, and compromised with Democrats in Congress, and with little reason to believe that he would be any different today, I think Reagan, if running for political office, would go the same way as Warren Hatch. He would be run down in the primaries by a more conservative opponent.
