Beginning in the 1960s and 1970s, revisionist historians began to look at the English Reformation differently than had their predecessors. Revisionists argued that the Reformation was forced upon the reluctant Catholic masses.
Later Whig historians who studied the English Reformation saw the movement as coming from the people. Some, however, like Geoffrey Elton saw it as being forced from above. Elton argued that Thomas Cromwell was more influential than even Henry VIII in bringing about the break with Rome.
One of the earliest views of the English Reformation involved viewing the Reformation as a spontaneous movement from the masses below. This popular movement led to a breakdown in religious hierarchy, which contributed to the move toward a more democratic society. There are problems with this view.
