My father in law was an alcoholic, but thankfully he is a recovering addict. There were times when self, my wife, and kid's life revolved around his demeanor because he lives with us for other reasons than addiction. Each day would and could change, we may be walking on eggshells one day in an attempt to prevent drama or there were days when conversation was deep and heart felt. All in all, it appears the days, whether good or bad  were lost because the following day was like nothing ever occurred, denial. Life was hectic and stressful, but manageable. However, I am proud of his recovery efforts and since, all our lives continue to improves remarkably.

I am truly sorry to hear about your father in law, I too can relate.A member of my family suffers from alcohol addiction and it's heartbreaking to see them in that state.  I'm glad to hear he's doing better and I hope he continues.
