Like Rome at its pinnacle, has the USA quietly slipped towards a military state?

When the Roman Empire hit its pinnacle, the time came when the occupied lands were so extensive that all Rome's resources went towards protecting the lands. The USAs hegemony has been more economical than territorial. Now we have the US Government spying on ordinary citizens and the military dispatched in an attempt to protect the American lifestyle by the Asian Doctrine and the efforts to keep the shipping lanes open in the South China Sea and Indian Oceans.

It seems to be going that way and American culture seems imbued with a lot of militarism today. Gore Vidal called it a 'Garrison State' which I think sounds right
