I think first you have to define what YOU mean by "political liberalism."
Because by definition, liberalism or "classical liberalism" is far different from the modern usage of the term to describe your average Progressive/Leftist/Statist types.
Yes, of course everyone has a right to belong to what political party they want in a Democratic Republic. I should say at least here in the United States of America we all have that right. I hope this answers your question. It is a matter of right and opinion.
