We have more (cameras), social media, Internet, and 24 hour cable news stations than we have ever had in the past.
The public has more ways now to vocalize their opinions!
This can be both good and bad. People are learning about cultural issues from more than just one bias source. In many cases opinions and feelings are replacing facts. So it’s not what happened it’s how people perceived it happened facts be darned.
When Black Lives Matter can call for death of whites and cops, segregation for the feelings of blacks, and have members attack whites while the federal leadership and local officials say "we feel your pain, you need space to destroy property and attack people you don't like" ... in contrast to 15 years ago when Morgan Freedman said black history month was redundant because we're all American - yes, we're much more racially divided.
Compounding the problem is preference in immigration for people who are from cultures as far from Judeo-Christian American as possible. As the minister at ATLAH ministries said, 60 years ago, it was black and white, very few Asians and Native Americans. Now you have 40 racial categories and combinations on the Census, and as many competing groups plus Muslims and other religious categories demanding their own accommodations. When you have far more factions, plus identity politics that say you belong to your demographic group first and foremost, you guarantee division on demographic characteristics and competition among them.

If you could go back in time, say 10 years ago, what would you invest your money in?I would buy a crapload of Apple stock, I read in an article about a year ago that if you had spent $400 buying Apple stock back in 2001 instead of buying an iPod, it would be worth over $10,000 today!
