"EEeeeeew" is what the majority thought. What happened to caring about the children in our public schools here in LA?

Are you confusing "caring about children" with throwing unlimited money at a failing system?

How could the los Angeles school system be failing?
        Why is the system failing?
How can you say such a thing?
Won't money help the failing system?
        How?
        If not, why not?

Interesting perspective, particularly since you often represent yourself as being on the right-wing.

Grover Norquist basically introduced the idea that every tax increase is a bad tax increase and all should be rejected.

Of course, we all know that's not true. However, voters generally don't want their taxes raised, so the government and/or politicians need to make a compelling case that a tax increase is going to benefit the appropriate people or the public at large.

Did they make that case here?

Further, our education system has been derided in the press as left-wing and failing at every turn, so why would voters, if they believe that message, vote for ANY tax increase that benefits education?

It's true that tax increases for education have failed here in Florida.  I'm not sure if the left-wing thing has been a key factor.  I've heard analysis that suggests much of the problem is that many retirees feel as though they've paid their share for education where ever they came from.  That could be the case as we have many retirees, and they vote.

I suspect that many DO have a lackluster view of our education system's effectiveness, and I've not looked closely at the subject to see why that is.   When I was in school some years ago, this wasn't the case, and I'm not sure when that changed, though I suspect it changed in the 90's - just a fair guess.

It changed five years ago with Common Core.

The teachers need help because of this wretched curriculum and the detrimental psychological effects it is having on EVERYONE!
If you ask me, remove the Common Core curriculum and everything will go back to normal. ALL problems, including "financial," solved.

My point is that people don't go for socialism as much as they say. Even here in "liberal" (not so much when it gets right down to it!) L.A.!

Maybe L. A. is not as liberal as they say.

    In their heart of hearts.

Socialism vs the ability to survive with liberty and justice for all !!!!!!

You think confusing lessons in math and grammar, computer use and constant data mining, as featured in public schools across the US, are helping the students learn? Are making them intelligent? Are helping them toward successful futures?

    think again.
